We recently connected with Soo Oh Bang and have shared our conversation below.
Soo Oh Bang , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Seeking support from friends and family in filmmaking is crucial, though it can feel burdensome. Initially, I was hesitant to ask for help, but I learned honesty is key. I made sure they knew it was okay to say no, prioritizing our relationship over the request. A specific example occurred during a short film project where I needed background actors for a dance scene. Despite my concerns, many friends were eager to help, seeing it as a chance to support me and experience my work firsthand. This taught me that what feels like a burden to me can be an opportunity for them to be part of my creative process.
In essence, I’ve discovered that seeking support is about extending a genuine invitation. This approach not only preserves relationships but also fosters a collaborative spirit, where friends and family willingly contribute to each other’s passions.
Soo Oh Bang , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, I’m Soo Oh Bang, a film, commercial, and music video director based in New York City. I was born and raised in South Korea and came to New York to enrich my creative journey. While my main roles involve directing and writing, I also participate as an editor and a director of photography.
Filmmaking, for me, is a lifelong aspiration sparked by the profound impact of cinema on my emotions and worldview. The enduring impressions left by these cinematic experiences persist long after the movies end, reminding me of the unique intersection where film and reality coexist. Inspired by these moments, my goal as a filmmaker is to convey similarly poignant emotional journeys.
The core of my work revolves around capturing a protagonist’s voyage and conveying the emotions they experience. Recognizing that perfect understanding between individuals is elusive due to the unique paths each person has walked, I find that the earnest pursuit of understanding each other forms the basis for our connection. Through my films, I aim to explore the common thread of humanity, where the shared desire for mutual understanding becomes a bridge uniting us all.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist, for me, lies in the limitless possibilities for growth and development. As I create my art, I am afforded the opportunity to continuously examine and refine it until I achieve satisfaction. The more time and effort I invest, the greater the chance to elevate its quality. In my case, a significant portion of my creative process is dedicated to writing scripts. While money plays a crucial role in enhancing overall quality, particularly in filmmaking, the realm of screenwriting and development primarily requires time and passion. This unique dynamic allows for limitless improvement, emphasizing the boundless potential for artistic expression and refinement
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is propelled by a clear mission—to reach as many audiences as possible and evoke genuine emotions through my work. I envision this as an endless expedition, continuously expanding my reach. Guided by the purpose of crafting films that convey profound emotions, my journey is not just about broadening horizons but also about embracing and connecting with as many people as I can.
