We were lucky to catch up with Sonya Savage recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sonya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
The best advice I was ever given was never stop learning. The aesthetics industry is a constant wheel of growth and change. To be a well educated and knowledgeable professional it takes continued learning. Esthetician school provides the hours to take a state test and get licensed however it’s when you actually start a position in the field when the real education begins. I’ve aligned myself with the top doctors, skincare brands and fellow aesthetics practitioners to continue to learn every day to stay at my best for my patients.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sonya Savage and I am the owner of Sonya Savage Skin Care, a medical spa focused on multicultural corrective skin treatments. As a leader in my field, I merge information from different educational and life experiences as related to the science of skin care. I invest my time observing practitioners I respect in the industry, continually educating myself through new training, networking within the industry and of course, practicing my trade as much as possible. I see more people focused on truly taking care of their skin more now than ever. People are prioritizing self care. The younger generations are starting preventative measures early on to stay youthful, beautiful and healthy. Those preventive measures include treatments that focus on repairing their skin barriers, stimulating collagen and making consistent hydration a priority. Sonya Savage Skin Care was the first DMK Paramedical provider in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. The DMK Enzyme, Stemzyme and muscle banding treatments address all skin concerns such as aging skin, hormonal acne and hyperpigmentation. I also focus on microneedling and lasers for scarring, texture, skin laxity and uneven skin tone. I specialize in multicultural corrective skin care so my treatments can service a large demographic of client. I have carefully curated product lines and equipment that address many different concerns without overly complicated protocols that are effective in all skin types and tones.
By having multiple modalities that are suitable for all ages and ethnicities, I am able to completely address my patient’s needs. I will continue to stay educated within the aesthetic field and plan on expanding my treatment menu. To me, it isn’t about providing all the new trending beauty fads, it’s about providing services that actually work and building upon that foundation.”
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, a thousand times over. I genuinely love what I do which I don’t take for granted. It’s an exciting field where I genuinely change people lives.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Learning to accept and understand how to market yourself and your business. Social media etc is the most valuable tool you have other than word of mouth and referrals.
