We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sonya Reyes a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sonya, thanks for joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
Being in the aesthetics industry can be really difficult at times. When I first was getting my start in aesthetics, I often found myself questioning whether or not I made the right decision to pursue this dream of mine. One of the moments that I’ll cherish forever is a moment I shared with one of my patients. She had been going through a hard time in life and was looking for a confidence boost. After I finished with her treatment, she began crying. At first, I thought she was crying because she was unhappy with the work. But she soon continued to tell me how happy she was and how choosing me as her provider was the best decision she could have made. I continue to reflect back on the day whenever I feel self-doubt. I’ve told her so many times how much her words have meant to me, but she will never truly understand the impact that they have had on my self-confidence and my career!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I originally decided to pursue my nursing career after wanting to fulfill my passion for helping others. I graduated from the University of Arkansas with my Bachelor of Nursing. During my undergrad, my mother had been battling a neurodegenerative disease called Corticobasal Degeneration. After living in Northwest Arkansas my entire life, I was ready to challenge myself and grow both individually and professionally. Although a tough decision due to my family’s circumstances, I decided to move to Dallas and pursue my nursing career here. I was lucky that both my parents encouraged and supported me making the move.
I worked in a medicine intensive care unit for 4 years while I also pursued my Master of Science to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I absolutely loved my time as an ICU nurse, and I am so grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today. While doing an interview with a nurse practitioner for a school assignment, I was asked why I hadn’t considered aesthetics. I have always admired the confidence that aesthetic treatments instill into a person and therefore I decided to invest into trainings.
Needless to say, I fell in love! I have always loved helping others, and aesthetic nursing allowed me to do that on a deeper level. It can be very vulnerable to go to receive a treatment for something that you may be insecure about, and it is so special to see your patient have a smile on their face when you hand them the mirror. I attended countless trainings and still continue to seek out educational opportunities through the NeoWell aesthetic injector program as well as one-on-one trainings. I decided to open my own practice, Lisse Aesthetics, in April of 2022 and finished my master’s degree in August of 2022. It has been amazing to see both Lisse Aesthetics and myself grow.

For those who follow me on social media, you know I LOVE doing lip filler. But my absolute favorite treatment is facial balancing. The impact that it has on someone’s overall appearance is amazing! It is definitely life changing.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
One of the most effective strategy for growing my clientele was word of mouth. I began with paying lots of money for marketing, and the clients would come and go. When I started to get my good client based settled, that is when my growth of clientele really took off due to word of mouth. Social media has also played a big roll in helping me reach new clients.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Just earlier this year, I almost gave a share of my business to some people who I thought had my best interest in life. I even closed my business for 2 months to get things worked out. It ultimately ended up being the wrong decision, so I decided to pull my business back to my full ownership. I always reference my business as my baby because that is what it feels like to me! I have put so much time and effort into growing and expensing business, that ultimately I really do know what’s best for it. Having to essentially start over after closing for 2 months during that time was extremely difficult. It really taught me a lesson in resilience and perseverance. Always listen to your heart!.
