Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sonya McGuire. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sonya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Sing for a cure is a heart project for me that came about due to me experiencing first hand so many women battling with cancer in my life and in our community. Unfortunately, I watched them suffer horribly battling cancer without help nor the resources that were supposed to be in place to help them. It broke my heart to see so many organizations out there that were said to help but I watch so many women including family, friends , and single mothers pass away without ever receiving that help that they needed. As a sister, friend and family member I would go to Drs appointments. I would buy groceries, assist in paying bills , help in cleaning their homes , sit with them in the hospital and assist in caring for their children. It broke my heart into pieces and I felt like there was more that I could do. So I reached out to some of my amazing friends in the gospel community to put together an event that would assist me in raising money so I could help those who were battling cancer or those who had passed away that
children that I could help with school.. I also had multiple companies that partnered with sing for a cure that donated gift cards , grocery store gift cards , Movie Passes , eat and play gift cards along with so much more. The 1st Sing for a cure brought out over 1500 people raising enough money to help several families and young adults that had lost their mother to cancer. We were also blessed to give each family a gift bag filled with gift cards so they could go out and enjoy each other as well. Every year Sing For A Cure got bigger and bigger until my mother took ill and I became her caregiver.
Although, I was a cancer survivor myself it knocked the breath out of me to find out that my mother had ovarian cancer. Then to find out that 3 of my sisters had cancer as well. One sister had skin cancer and the other two had breast cancer. One valuable lesson i learned was that everyone’s situation is different. When you have supportive family and friends it makes a major difference in your journey.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sonya McGuire is a preachers’ daughter who learned to sing, act, play instruments and appreciate music at a very early age. With music playing such a dominant role in her home, She felt there was no other path for her than to follow the unofficial “family business.” Initially, Sonya chose drums and Keys to express her musical creativity. Later she developed a love for playing instruments singing , directing, and she quickly became the obvious choice for musical director at her father’s church. She is truly a multi-gifted individual. She is a singer, recording artist, songwriter, musician, and was a Radio Personality for freedom radio. Her passion for music and the arts is at the heart of all she does. Sonya’s unique style of singing has electrified audiences, offering them an original organic soulful experience. With vocal ability that is comparable to none and marveled by many, Sonya incorporates thought provoking lyrics with unmistakable jazz overtones into her music. Her eclectic songwriting abilities blends soul, R&B, jazz, funk, and urban gospel music. If I had to describe my personal brand it would be “Life Music” I say that because when you hear the music that I sing and produce it will definitely take you on a journey . It’s not just one genre of music , it’s a life story where you experience the ups , downs , lessons of life , love, Spirituality and so much more. ? I would define my sound as organic because with every song I sing you’ll hear a different sound that helps you to relate to that moment. When I sing , I sing with everything I am revealing the most intimate chambers of my heart to those listening. I desire for those that are present to have an experience that they can relate to 1st hand . I desire for you to feel like you were there at the time of the conception of every song and can experience all of the emotions pertaining to that song.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
My ability to see my work transcend language barriers, culture barriers and enhance someone else’s life.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe it’s the art of stick-to-it-ive-ness., which is defined simply as the backbone, heart, persistence, grit, stamina, staying power and the art of never giving up. The dream is only a dream until you refuse to give up on it being a reality, Unfortunately, a lot of people have dreams that they never fulfil because they move from one thing to the next but when you get to the place of making what you once dreamed your reality it simply shows that you refused to quit!
