We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sonya Macari. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sonya below.
Sonya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Growing up I felt like I always lived in my imagination, I still do. I’ll never forget watching the wizard of Oz and thinking to myself I want to do that, it seemed so simple to me in my own head. I studied in New York at the HB Studios, I just loved it and it was there where I had developed a serious love & respect for the art and craft of acting.
I’ve had many coaches over the years but one which is I have been incredibly lucky to experience was Anthony Hopkins. He no longer gives Masterclasses, and i was one of the lucky few to have had a one on one with him and I will say it’s one of my fondest memories. “ Tony” as he insisted I call him, critiqued, complimented and advised me in a way I shall never forget. He’s not just a tremendous actor but an extraordinary humble human being.
There’s not a day that doesn’t go by where I don’t think about acting. For me it’s not just the process, it’s the experience while creating it, the research (which is my favorite) but it’s also to touch others and to move me also.
The acting business is so competitive, incredibly so. We put ourselves out there on a weekly basis only to be judged, rejected, objectified… omg.. why do we do it!! lol… We have so little control, it’s out of our hands, but I always say being true to the work and making an impression is in your control, so focus on that and also being in the moment. Create a compelling character and give it your all!
I believe in always studying as an actor. It allows you to grow, to push your boundaries and keep your muscles working all the time. Today I feel i have so much more to contribute. I have a new sense of freedom with my craft and i’m enjoying it a lot more. There’s no speeding up the process. I think as an actor you contribute as much as you absorb. If you live a deep, rich, meaningful life, an interesting and challenging life, you have that much more to share.
Sonya , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
One thing I know is that I love actors, always have. I think they’re amazing. And as an actor myself, I know we are continuously learning, pushing through boundaries and working on our craft to be better storytellers every day.
These are the reasons why I started Creative Actors Studios. It’s a platform dedicated for actors all over the globe, giving them access to masterclasses, workshops and talks with casting directors, agents, acting coaches and many other creatives from Los Angeles. They can gain that unique, personalized insight directly from renowned acting coaches living and working in the entertainment industry here in LA. I usually schedule the events on a Saturday at 10am which is 6/7pm in countries like Ireland, Italy, France and England. We have actors zooming in for classes from all over the world and of course from The U.S also.
A lot of time and effort goes into the setting up each class. The marketing and then the execution of each Masterclasses and Talks etc. But I love every minute of it. There’s so much satisfaction especially after each event, and the actors walk away feeling more confident, resilient, and in turn more free. They are inspired and their gifts are being embraced.
I’m lucky I have the privilege of making this one of my jobs and the way I see it is I’m giving actors an amazing opportunity to work with renowned creatives from the Industry in Los Angeles from the comfort of their own homes. I’m giving them the opportunity to grow as actors and at the same time I’m also getting to learn new things about this business myself, which I absolutely love.
The feedback thus far has been incredible and I’m forever grateful to all of the actors who have taken classes and of course to all the incredible coaches, casting directors and creatives that have collaborated with me on my platform. They are the reason my actors get guidance and the motivation to better themselves and feel inspired and grow as an actor.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
You know, this business is hard! You see it on a daily basis, the rejection, the ups and downs, the obstacles that are put up in front of us. We’ve also just experienced a pandemic which has changed the business a bit, the grind is the same but the business has changed.
Through Creative Acting Studios my goal is to educate and inspire actors. The Creatives at CAS giving the masterclasses navigate the actors so they are more prepared for auditions and jobs.
At CAS classes, we try our best to teach the actors how to have a lasting career and staying power in this industry. The lifestyle and sacrifice it takes to be an actor can be intense, it takes courage and bravery. We take risks on a daily basis.
The illusion is that when you break a barrier in this business, it gets easier, but that’s not really the case. It gets different, more complex, it gets harder and you’re up against a lot more. Our mission to to teach the actors to be better, to work on the craft, so when opportunity knocks, they’re ready.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Creative Acting Studios is just one year old, so we are a new company and social media has played a very important role for me, mainly on instagram.
Social Media in general has become such an integral part of how we live and communicate. I feel like it’s a necessity to generate attention for my brand in today’s society and culture. I don’t pay someone to run stories or post stories, it’s all done by me. I usually spend my early Sunday morning working on creating all the content for the week ahead and It’s all scheduled through an app which makes my life a bit easier.
What’s important in my opinion is the interaction I have with the actors / followers. I try to post content which resonates with me personally which then hopefully my followers with like also.
Through theatrical agents, casting directors, schools and other many other creative outlets, i’m constantly reaching new audiences which I think is a testament of my brand and what we offer. It’s growing organically and it’s generating a lot of interest and attention. I’m very excited for 2023 for Creative Acting Studios.
