Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sonya Hensley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

SONYA , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?

I used to follow my mother to the craft store. I started buying beads and plastic ties .I made some super cool key chains.
I sold a lot of those it was so surprising and I’d get color orders.. I lived it

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I started as a dancer in Louisville, KY. I had multiple scholarships, jobs and even started teaching at 15 1/2 years of age in the Dancemobile, as mobile Comminity Center dance teacher. A picture of me teaching my three year Olds went “viral” ,so to speak . It became a well requested picture from the Associated Press photo wire service. Any country, paper, or organization could pay to use the picture.
I was in Ebony ,Jet , US Magazine ad Interpapers from Zurich, Switzerland to Germany I found the paper and people who knew me sent clippings . I returned to the Community Center featured in the photo description and there was a huge bag of fan mail waiting for me ! I wrote my of the fans back until I didn’t have time any more!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

I have begun an entirely new journey as a single woman artist over fifty.
I have rollerskated like a fiend for the last 7 years and it has saved my sanity, strong physicality, been inspired by more senior and younger skaters. I clocked in 109 rollerskating sessions last year 2023 from May through October.
I was so amazing fed by these dolitary yet communal gatherings of skaters using rollerskating like a cure all .Mood elevator, muscle builder, confidence booster, freeing thing I could do . I am so much more resilient because of rollerskating .
I want to foster a healthier rollerskating society all over the world .

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

At this point in my life I have evolved into a powerhouse. I will n longer people please and dim my light. I eilk have the courage to present honest ,emotional creative works through song, spoken word, acting, fashion design , artworks, and staging
Inspire each one of my fans to take a leap of faith and bet on themselves. Take a leap into the unknown and finally rep your own magic.
