Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sonya Carr. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sonya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always been a baker but three years ago, I officially took the leap of faith to officially launch Mommy & Me Bakery. As a full time HR Professional, I knew this would be a challenge. Three years later, I have no regrets. It has been an amazing journey. I would encourage anyone who is debating whether or not to take the leap and launch their new business to DO IT!
Why open a bakery? I have always loved to bake. Anytime you’re doing what you enjoy, it’s no longer just a job. Baking is my passion. I enjoy trying new recipes and techniques but what I love most is providing a quality product at a fair rate with superior customer service. When selecting a baker, customers can choose anyone. I grateful each time they choose me!
Over the past three years, I have learned so much from being a business owner. I originally launched as a home based bakery and now have my first store front. This journey has been amazing and I’m so thankful for all the support!!!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Mommy & Me Bakery services the Hampton County, SC and Columbia, SC area. We provide a variety of southern desserts for personal indulgence, family gatherings and special occasions.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I have always believed that building a brand can be easy if it aligns with your personal beliefs. Quality products and superior customer service is what I expect when purchasing goods and services. As a result, it’s what I must also provide as a business owner. When customers feel valued and appreciated, they will continue to support your business and refer you to others. These two simple principles have helped me to build a strong consistent brand in my community and surrounding areas.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In October 2022, I expanded my business to include opening my first store front. While it has been a huge success, it’s also come with a lot of learning. Transitioning from a home based bakery to a store front has presented its challenges. You have to learn and anticipate your store front customer traffic and demand in addition to supporting your direct orders. Each day I continue to make process improvements from doing research and customer feedback. At any time when you take on a new venture, it’s so important to have a good support system, research as much as possible, welcome feedback with an open mind, and have a business mentor.
