Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sonya Brazeal . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sonya, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
One of the most important lessons I learned at a prior job was the importance of building relationships. As a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines, Herb Kelleher and Colleen Barrett (2 of the original founders/leaders of Southwest Airlines) taught us this very important skill. We have internal and external customers. We were taught to build relationships with our co-workers (internal customers) and our passengers (external customers) by “going the extra mile” when providing positively outrageous customer service. As the CEO of Amazing Window Cleaners, I have carried this practice into my own company. It really doesn’t matter if you are flying jets or washing windows, it’s the customer service experience that matters. This can only be accomplished by building trusting relationships.

Sonya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I had the windows in my home cleaned by a professional company for the first time. I had always cleaned my own windows. I thought I had hired a locally owned company. I like to support small businesses in my community. During my window cleaning service, I discovered that the company was not local (even though they had a local phone number on the flyer), and they were not authorized to work in the USA. They didn’t know if they were insured by the company because they were 1099 contractors. Although, they did a nice job on the windows and I was happy with their work, it was a less than optimal experience from a safety & security standpoint. This is the reason we decided to start our own company. We wanted to serve our community in a trusting and comfortable way. We are insured, bonded and all of our technicians are W2 employees. They are experienced, professional and background checked. We are a locally owned business. We work hard to gain our customers’ trust and treat their property as though it were our own. We have a fully registered trademark via the USPTO for our company name and we own the brand – Amazing Window Cleaners. We have recently won The Pinnacle Award given by the Better Business Bureau for achievements and quality in the workplace.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, at the onset of Covid in March of 2020, my husband and I decided to launch our own business because our primary jobs had been put on hold. Our schedules were pulled for April of 2020 and we were asked to take a leave of 1-5 years or consider early retirement. After 30 years in the same career, it was scary to become an entrepreneur however, we jumped right in! We’ve used our life experiences, customer service skills and leadership knowledge to create our own company – Amazing Window Cleaners.

Let’s move on to buying businesses – can you talk to us about your experience with business acquisitions?
Yes. When I entered into the Window Cleaning, Gutter Cleaning and Pressure washing space, I knew I had to get to know fellow business owners in the same industry. I called and introduced myself to a couple of my competitors and let them know we would be available should they ever need us and vice versa. There were some companies that provided services that we did not, so I needed to be able to take care of our customers’ needs by giving them credible referrals. After 9 months in business, I was approached by one of these companies and asked if I would be interested in purchasing them. My husband and I decided that it would be a fabulous idea and would basically double our client base overnight. We consulted with our business law attorney and the acquisition took place. It was a win/win for both of us as business owners. He wanted to exit the industry and I wanted to grow my client base!
