We recently connected with Sonrizas and have shared our conversation below.
Sonrizas, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
We got to a point in our set building where the music we wanted to play out, didn’t exist. On top that, we knew that if we wanted to create a sound that people will love, we had to begin producing original music. That was enough encouragement for us to begin taking our music career more seriously. Shortly after we released our first single in 2022 ‘Murga’.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Sonrizas is a dynamic DJ and producer duo who have been igniting dancefloors with their distinct blend of tech house and Latin-infused beats. They are dually located in Denver, CO and Austin, TX. Hailing originally from south Texas, these two talents have united their passion to craft a sound that is as diverse and vibrant as their Latin origins, with a mission to bring smiles to the dancefloor.
The duo’s high-energy sets have garnered attention in their local nightlife scenes, resulting in support bookings for acts like Nic Fanciulli, Cloonee, Francisco Allendes, and Sonny Fodera.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When we graduated from DJing at home to more legitimate venues, we were faced with the reality of being women in the music industry. Seeing as most of our peers are male, they don’t experience the same barrier to entry that we do in this male dominated creative industry. Whether it’s forced auditions for a gig, creating private mixes and sending unreleased music to be considered for a booking (we were the only DJs asked to do this), inability to form relationships with others in the scene due to not succumbing to romantic, unprofessional advances, or getting the short end of the stick because we are not “homies” with the promoter; we seem to find ourselves needing to “prove” we are worth it with more effort than our male counterparts to be taken seriously as artists.
Experiences like these have proven to us how important purposeful diversity and representation is in dance music. This inspired us to create our own event series “Para Ti” (for you in Spanish), that is focused on showcasing artists from diverse backgrounds and cultivating an inclusive environment for attendees.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
