We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sonny Kruger. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sonny below.
Hi Sonny, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have ever worked on has to be my “Dead” trilogy. “Dead” was the story that started it all for me. My brother Eddy and I loved playing movies as kids with our toys, but eventually we stopped. Then I would just think of movies and shows in my head. I thought they would be so great and win all of these awards if they happened, but I didn’t have the money to make them. However, I did have the tools to write. So, I decided to write my stories as books. Instead of just thinking of stories in my head, I started writing down ideas so I could actually make them. “Dead” was the story that would play in my mind like a T.V. show and it really entertained me. I knew I was onto something and that this needed to be the story I wrote. I had so many ideas and saw so many scenes in my head, but I knew I didn’t want to cram it all into one story. Quickly, I knew this would be told over multiple books. On August 29th of 2012 with my dog/brother Dexter by my side, I started writing my story of “Dead”. Less than three months later, I had finished writing “Dead”. I was extremely happy and proud of myself for writing this story that I love, but I wasn’t finished. No way! The story of the Chase family wasn’t even close to ending. I jumped right into writing “Dead 2” only weeks later, before I even told most people about the original. My mom and Nana were the first two people to read my story, and they would continue being the first two people to read my stories for years to come, almost racing to be the first to finish. After “Dead 2” it was time to conclude the trilogy, but now there were many other stories coming into my mind begging to be made. I decided to write “A Love To Die For” and then “Killing Set In Motion” before going back to the “Dead” series to finish it off. It was sad and happy to finish the “Dead” trilogy. Sad to say goodbye to the story, but happy for what I had created and accomplished with a story that was in my head. Over the years I wrote many other stories, still with my Dexter by my side and my mom and Nana being the first two to read them, but eventually things have to change. It’s the way life is. “Dead” is actually a story about life, and we all must deal with the death of loved ones. Eventually, my Nana passed away and I moved in with the woman I love, my Maria. Now my mom and fiance are the first two people to read my stories. Throughout the years I had entered “Dead” into multiple contests with no luck, but when I started adapting my stories into screenplays things changed. On August 7th, 2022, my Dexter passed away. My buddy who had been with me through it all was gone. But similar to how it is in “Dead”, I have Faith that the spirits of my loved ones have carried on and gone to God’s Kingdom Of Heaven. Sometimes we can all use a sign in our lives that things are going to get better. And what do you know? One week after Dexter passed away “Dead” won its first award, Best Television Script in the Sweet Democracy Film Awards. Later in the month on August 29th, 2022, ten years after I started writing “Dead”, I started writing the prequel “Before Death”.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Writer/Actor/Director/Podcast Host who is always working on something, and that’s the way I love it! Stories have always been in my head, so in my early twenties I started writing them. In my teens, I wrote a lot of songs, but we can talk about my music another time. I LOVE writing, but I want to show the world my stories in more ways than writing. So far, I’ve done that with “A Series About A Series”. That’s where the acting and directing come in. However, I am an actor who isn’t confined to only acting in projects that I’ve made. Hosting The Code-X Podcast (with The Code-X Station) alongside my friends like Jamie Wojcik and Tim Morse came from our shared love of comic books. I will be looking to take some of my work to the comic book world, but again, that’s for a later time. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing my short story “The Comic Book” turned into an actual comic book. I have many dreams and I am chasing them all!

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Check out our work! Give likes, hearts, stars, leave positive comments, subscribe, share our projects, and/or purchase something that we’re selling. We could all use the help. Many “celebrities” have the advantage of having thousands of dollars used to promote their content, whereas the rest of us really rely on the help of those around us and our fans.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I thought in my twenties I would be this huge rich celebrity, but I am glad God made things go a bit differently for me. I am rich in life, but not with money. I have Faith, loved ones, good health, and I work on my dreams every day, so I am truly blessed. However, I did see my money dwindling down and I wasn’t making anywhere near what I thought I would be, so I knew I had to go out and get a regular person job. So, I got a job at Wal-Mart, and you know what? I loved it. Every day I knew I was working towards the dream and that every day was another day closer to making my dreams come true. Plus, I met a lot of great interesting people there, and many became friends that I still keep in touch with to this day. During that time, I was working in the evening and writing throughout the night. Working at Wal-Mart also turned out to be good for my career because I got very used to dealing with the public on a daily basis. Once I left my job at Wal-Mart, I knew it was time to finally get my foot in the door in the film industry.
