We recently connected with Sonny Kruger and have shared our conversation below.
Sonny, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2020 I took the risk of taking one of my stories and turning it into a web series that I would make. Some people are interested when you write a book, but when you go into filmmaking, everyone gets interested. They say in filmmaking that you should start off with a short film. I’m stubborn, determined, and I have a lot of confidence in myself. I had a story that I believed I could make into a pilot with the tools I had, so that’s what I was going to do. I wrote half of the book “A Series About A Series” and then the pandemic caused the world to shut down. Just when I started getting a lot of work as an extra/stand-in, work stopped. Losing that job and the world being in shambles changed my state of mind, so I put the story on hold and wrote another one entitled “Fugue”. A little after that, I got back to writing “A Series About A Series” and finished the story. Now it was time to make it, but mostly everyone was still stuck inside. I am a man of Faith, so I didn’t make up excuses or give up before I even truly got started. I made a plan. I would use this time to learn as much as I can before things open up again, and I would have auditions virtually. With Facebook posts in filmmaking groups I got in touch with a lot of people who were interested in being a part of the series. I held auditions virtually and cast the characters in my series that way. Eventually, things opened up and it was time to film. Filming and then post-production is a whole other story for another time. However, at the end of 2021 the pilot was ready for the world to see. Now everyone could see if all of the hype was real. Was I just a dreamer who shouldn’t have made a pilot as his first work in film, or would I (with the help of many others) show that I was the real deal? You only get one first, and this was it. On December 17, 2021, Episode 1: Pilot of “A Series About A Series” premiered on YouTube. My fiance, Maria, and I watched the episode the night before, so I wasn’t so anxious the day of. The night of the premiere I was surrounded by loved ones and it was time to watch. With Faith, determination, hard work, and the help of everyone involved, a dream of mine was accomplished. The episode came out just like I wanted it to. Everyone watching with me had a great time, enjoying the fun episode together. It is a time I will remember for the rest of my life and nothing can take that away from me. Was the risk, the time, the effort, all worth it? Without a doubt. Not only did I and those around me love the episode, but it has earned quite a few awards in the independent film festival scene, including Best Web/Tv Series and Best Director. I learned so much, met so many great people, and grew as a person during the making of my first pilot. Now, it’s time to continue the show and make more episodes of “A Series About A Series”!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Writer. Actor. Director. Podcast host. There are many things you could call me. One thing I’ve always been is a dreamer. My brother and I used to play movies with our toys, but eventually stopped playing with toys. However, I still came up with movies in my head. I would have all of these movies in my head and would think they’d be so great and win all of these awards, so one day I told myself to do it. That if these movies in my head were so great, that I should make them. I knew I didn’t have anywhere near the money to make these movies, but I knew I had all of the tools to write them as books. So, I started writing notes for the stories in my head and eventually started writing them as books. I came up with a series called “Dead” and wrote that into a trilogy. “Dead” would be the first of many books written. Once ideas for “A Series About A Series” came into my mind, I knew this was the one I could make first. I wrote it, directed it, starred in it, edited it, and did even more than that. I am proud that I am making my dreams come true and I have been able to do so while staying true to myself, my beliefs, and those around me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have Faith that God has given me many gifts so that I can use these gifts to help people and animals all around the world. I feel it would be selfish for me to not use my gifts and to just go on living only for myself. One way I can help others now is by entertaining them, whether it be with my stories, my show, or my podcast. One day my work will lead me to a lot of money, so then I will be able to donate a lot to those in need.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Taking the stories from my head and turning them into actual art, and then being able to share them with others and have it entertain them and take them away from the problems in real life, like the works of others have done for me.
