Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sonnet Simmons & John Clinebell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sonnet Simmons & John Clinebell, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
How long have you got!? Haha. Seriously, it hasn’t been a formulaic story to our growth. We mostly listen a lot to what our community is saying. The challenges they are facing, connections they are making with each other and with the music industry. And of course what’s working for our students is so important to pay attention to. We constantly tweak our offerings to make them more effective based on all of this feedback we’re getting all of the time. And then we strategically create new offerings based on what the things our community needs the most to help them create a fulfilling career in the music industry. It always goes back to our community and engaging it to find how we can best serve them.
Sonnet Simmons & John Clinebell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We’re a couple of indie artists who have built fulfilling careers for ourselves in the music industry. We love coaching artists, songwriters and producers who are stuck to really own their life’s purpose and take a lot of action to make their music dreams more than just an unrealized wish. We see so much of our own journeys in the amazing members of the communities we host and programs we offer. Our main focus is helping music makers to discover their superpowers, team up with likeminded artists, and monetize through proven strategies. We offer something different from all the “cheesies and sleazies” out there in the music industry: heart-centric, holistic music business coaching that’s goal-oriented and powered by the support and accountability only a vibrant community can provide.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
So we first met at a sync songwriter’s workshop series back in early 2016 taught by Cathy Heller. We started working on music together shortly after meeting and our very first collaboration (eventually) resulted in multiple syncs in Italian media! Sonnet started teaching for Cathy shortly after, and quickly became a well-respected music licensing coach as she ran Catch The Moon’s sync agency. A couple years later, Sonnet needed to step away from CTM and John took more or less replaced her. Teaching cohorts of 300+ students and running the agency. Then starting in 2020 both of us taught together at Catch The Moon until Cathy Heller shut it all down in late 2021. We decided that we wanted to keep going, so we started our own company which soon was named 2Indie.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We always do our best to honor our business agreements, keeping everything above the table and in writing. Being transparent in business has a magic effect. Our service-oriented approach to everything we’re doing seems to attract a lot of attention as well. We’re not in the business of making ourselves look like rockstars, or jamming cheesy sales pitches down people’s ears. There’s already enough sleaze in the music industry, we’re working to fight it as a community and create genuine connection in the industry. Real breakthroughs that individuals have that we all celebrate together. Those wins, big and small, are what we live for as a coaching company and we think that the whole world can see that’s where we’re coming from and appreciate it.
