We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sonja Stolzenberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sonja, appreciate you joining us today. Showing clients you appreciate them is something I think most folks want to do – but it’s not always clear how to do it in a meaningful way. What’s one of the best examples of client appreciation you can share with us?
My clients are my family! Helping them through what is likely their life’s biggest investment requires a lot of guidance, handholding, counseling, and support. After working for days, weeks, months, or even years together, my clients and I become very close and an everlasting bond is created. This is the reason that my real estate business is based 90% on past clients and referrals, and I am very proud of it!
As a huge THANKS to my clients for trusting me with their journey, I love to host events that give value back to them. Alongside BBQs and pool parties throughout the year, my favorite client appreciation event is an annual photoshoot each November. My clients bring their families and/or pets to iconic locations here in San Diego and create lasting memories with professional portraits. The photoshoot is strategically timed so that my clients can use their portraits for holiday cards, alleviating a point of stress for many during a busy time of the year. I also see clients use these high quality photos as social media profile pics and even for their engagement announcements! Growing families love using the annual photoshoot to document their life’s journey, and one client even came to the photoshoot nine months pregnant to then give birth the same night!
Setting up this photoshoot gives me the opportunity to stay in my clients’ lives, see them each year, and gives them a reason to get everyone together for great pictures without any planning or effort on their part. I cannot wait to invite them back to this year’s event!

Have you ever had to pivot?
After 13 years in real estate, I attended a seminar hosted by Keller Williams Real Estate and I was blown away. The education and culture that was presented to me made me want to join immediately and I did. Within one year, I increased my production by 330% and became a top producer in the office. Seven years later, I am still on the leadership board and also run the Culture Committee. This year, I was nominated as the culture ambassador for Southern California, one of the biggest honors I ever received in my life!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I worked as an agent and lived through the biggest recession that real estate ever had in 2008. It was hard time as many families were loosing their homes and their hard eared money. I educated myself in short sales and helped clients through this period in the market. My goal was to guide them through the short sale and save them from foreclosures, so they could start rebuilding their lives faster.
