We were lucky to catch up with Sonia Robles/ Angelita Brinkley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sonia Robles/ Angelita Brinkley , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
When we started our company 4 years ago, it was out of a need that we understood Houston could have benefited from tremendously. Mobile Soft Play was not an industry found here, but seemed to be doing well in other states. As we gained momentum, we soon found that a variety of themes and color schemes were not available for us as owners to purchase. We did lots of research on how the manufacturing side of making the equipment works, and decided to make our own based on the colors our clients use. As that part of the business began expanding we found another need in the industry that hadn’t been met., a cleaning solution that was tough on germs, viruses, etc., but gentle enough to not ruin the equipment, and safe enough for Toddlers. So, once again we went into research, and found a lab that could create exactly what we as soft Play owners needed. We now offer two products that can be purchased to other businesses, as well as families alike.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We began the company ( Toddler Towns) over four years ago because we wanted something for my daughter’s 2nd birthday, and couldn’t find a company here in Houston that provided mobile Soft Play. We expanded our inventory about a year into being in business by manufacturing equipment for ourselves. Our disinfectant line formulated for Soft Play Equipment and nurseries was just launched this past year. We provide a service to help our clients in celebrating those first years of special birthdays for their little ones, in a safe, creative environment, while providing peace of mind in organizing their events.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth through our customer service from beginning to end has definitely been our number one source of growing our clientele.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During Covid as so many other businesses were closing we had to get creative in how we were going to try to stay in business. We decided that we would offer several day packages along with front door drop offs in order to help keep their toddlers entertained during lockdowns, and allow them to still celebrate their special day.
