We recently connected with Sonia Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Sonia , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Having spent many years immersed in the practice of yoga, I found myself drawn not only to the physical postures but also to the deeper spiritual essence that yoga embodies. It was during these introspective moments on the mat that the seeds of inspiration for my jewelry business, Sonia Denise Roberts, were sown.
Combining my love for yoga and jewelry, I embarked on a journey to infuse mindfulness into metal, to craft pieces that transcend mere adornment and become sacred talismans for the soul.
In a world inundated with mass-produced baubles, I seek to offer something different—a blend of artistry and spirituality, handcrafted with care and reverence for the Earth. Sustainability is always a guiding principle, with materials sourced responsibly to honor the interconnectedness of all life.
What inspired me wasn’t just the desire to create beautiful jewelry but a profound understanding of the transformative power of mindfulness. Jewelry, as a vessel for cultivating presence, anchoring moments of stillness in the chaos of everyday life.
Sonia , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, I’m Sonia Denise Roberts, a passionate metalsmith and yoga teacher based in the beautiful Bay Area, California. I design organic jewelry imbued with a sense of sacredness, adorned and inspired by spiritual individuals with an elegant touch.
My life is a tapestry woven from diverse threads – I’m a wife, a mother, an aspiring world traveler, a nature enthusiast, and a foodie. But above all, I’m an artist who finds her truest expression through the creation of organic jewelry imbued with a sense of sacredness.
My journey into the world of jewelry-making began in the summer of 2019. That’s when I crafted my very first ring, and the spark was ignited. Just six months later, I took the leap and invested in a bench, officially setting myself on the path of jewelry design and creation.
Every bead, every metalwork, every design tells a story—a story of mindfulness, of connection, of alchemy transforming raw materials into expressions of the divine.
Each piece created is a reminder to breathe, to be, to embrace the sacredness of every moment.
Through Organic Sacred Jewelry, I seek to solve a fundamental problem—the disconnect between people and the deeper dimensions of their existence. In a fast-paced world, where distractions abound and materialism reigns supreme, I recognize the need for reminders of the sacred, tangible tokens of the soul’s journey.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell on my own site, www.soniadeniseroberts.com, using Shopify. There are many benefits to using your own website for e-commerce. By establishing a branded online presence, you can maintain full control over your digital storefront, customize the user experience to align with your brand identity, and cultivate deeper connections with customers through personalized interactions and loyalty programs. Overall, utilizing your own website for e-commerce empowers businesses to build a strong online presence, foster customer loyalty, and drive sustainable growth.
One significant drawback is the lack of personal interaction between consumers and businesses. In traditional retail settings, face-to-face interactions allow for immediate assistance, personalized recommendations, and the opportunity to address concerns in real-time. In addition, the reliance on digital platforms means that technical issues, such as website crashes or payment processing errors, can disrupt the shopping experience and lead to lost sales.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Digital Marketing and E-commerce have been effective in growing clientele. Professional website, social media, SEO techniques and email marketing. In fact, spend more time building you email newsletter subscriber list rather than social media followers.
Collaborations, Partnerships and Networking increase visibility. Collaborate with other jewelry designers, social media influencers, and seek out opportunities to participate in craft shows, artisan markets and art exhibits.
Word of mouth will always be the best way to grow your business. Get people talking about your business!
