We were lucky to catch up with Sonia Dali recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sonia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Life is all about risk. My path for the past 15 years has shown that it’s worth it. As an artist, there is something within us that cannot be ignored. I am originally from Paris, where art and beauty surrounded me, existing within me. When I took my first risk and moved to London, I arrived knowing only one sentence in English. But my passion for music and creation acted as blinders, propelling me toward the new life I had always dreamed of.
After 10 years in London, securing a record deal with A big french label, achieving a top-charting hit, and learning many lessons, I took another risk: I moved across the ocean to Los Angeles. There, I not only had to rebuild my career from scratch but also had to manage and pay my dues (literally) for getting a visa and reestablishing myself within the music industry. These hardships, dead ends, and beautiful lessons in willpower, strength, and following my heart got me through.
Seven years later, the risks have proven their rewards. The journey is never-ending, and once you embrace the beauty of such a journey, the risks become a part of you. The fear dissipates because you understand that there is nothing without risk.
Sonia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Originally from Paris, I’ve been playing music for as long as I can remember. My first gigs were in the south of France, performing for my family and passersby with a small mic and tape recorder by the age of 2. Fast forward to now, and I’m a singer/songwriter, producer, and DJ. My genres range from jazz and soul to deep house and R&B. I’ve performed on stages in Paris, London, and LA.
What I aim to achieve with my music is to uplift people. Whether through my voice or the melodies, I want listeners to be moved, to feel better, and to warm their hearts. I aspire to make the world a better place through my music.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I’m genuinely thrilled to be part of the upcoming music revolution. NFTs, blockchain, and the entire tech world are providing artists with the tools to take their careers to the next level and, most importantly, to earn what they’re worth. We live in a simultaneously terrifying and beautiful time, a technological renaissance where creatives can harness their power to share their work with the world without falling into the same mistakes or succumbing to the greed and abuse of various companies that have wronged so many artists in the past. I am so excited and proud to live in a world where artists can finally share their work and get properly compensated for it.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I want to live in an artistic industry where artists can showcase their work directly to listeners, who can then become actively involved. This digital age presents us with an opportunity to invest in our passions. Society, with its beautiful humans, must recognize the true value of beauty and what moves us. How many songs have changed someone’s life? How many memories are etched in our hearts because of a song, book, movie, or painting? Art surrounds us and has the power to change the world for the better if we allow it, if we support it.
It all begins with us, realizing that we are the catalysts for change. We can support each other by directly supporting ourselves. Society is a reflection of who we are, meaning we have the power to shape the direction of this beautiful life. Everything can be considered art if we embrace it as such.
