We were lucky to catch up with Sonia Cervantes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sonia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I had a defining moment to change careers when I saw my aging parent’s quality of life decline rapidly due to chronic disease illnesses. My dad was a hard-working man looking forward to retiring to enjoy his life. Unfortunately, soon after he retired, he had to take care of my Mom as she was diagnosed with diabetes and dementia. At that moment, I realized that I wanted to do something to help people improve their health and quality of life through prevention. That is when I decided to start my wellness company, The phrase “health is wealth” really resonated with me. We worry about our finances, but we omit to pay attention to our health. Our health and wellness are everything.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Sonia’s Healthy Corner was born to help individuals, families, and organizations take charge of their health through simple everyday lifestyle changes they can adopt to be healthier and happier. I provide the tools and the know-how through educational workshops, coaching sessions, interactive webinars, and healthy cooking classes for all ages.
I offer a back-to-basics holistic approach focusing on four core areas of Wellness: Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude, and Nutrition.
As a foodie, I love to eat! I believe in food as medicine, so I am always creating different recipes that are delicious and also nourishing for the body. This is where my therapeutic chef certification will come into play!
I want people to know that healthy eating is not boring and can be affordable.
I work with all age groups: kids, family wellness, seniors, and corporate wellness, There is a need for all of us to take charge of our health! If not now, when? If not us, who?
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Of course, knowledge and continued training are essential for any practice. I am a nerd in that sense. I love to learn and get as much knowledge as possible to serve my clients better. Equally as important is building trust. I touch on individuals’ health and wellness. To entrust me with their well-being, people need to know who I am and my credentials. I had to build credibility, develop relationships, and show that I was capable of helping people.
Collaborating and partnering with mission-aligned organizations with the same philosophy of transforming lives has been very important.
I am very engaged in the community and participate with several local organizations supporting their health and wellness efforts.
I am a Live Well San Diego recognized partner and a member of local organizations like the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Like everyone else, I have a “Covid “ story to tell. I was doing Corporate Wellness workshops, cooking demos, and traveling to do presentations. Then, covid hit, and everything came to a stop. I had to pivot and started doing everything virtually. Initially, it was awkward, but it became the “new normal.” It allowed me to start my YouTube channel and be more proactive in my social media platforms. I enjoy making videos and doing virtual presentations. It also helped me become more creative to keep things engaging.
To this day, I am still doing virtual presentations, cooking demos, and webinars. I am building content videos and having lots of fun with it!
So there is a silver lining behind the adjustment that needed to be made.
