Today we’d like to introduce you to Sondra Falk.
Hi Sondra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My fashion journey started when I was very young around the age of 10 or 11. I believe my love of fashion blossomed because my mother was truly a fashion maven. She had a style all her own and always exuded confidence. I remember wanting to dress like her, but I attended a private catholic school and required strict uniforms which curbed my ability to do so.
That didn’t stop my love of fashion though, I remember being able to look at a style or design that someone was wearing that I liked and being able to go home and find a way to make it out of whatever supplies I had. Not everything was fabric, I remember using scraps of wallpaper, vinyl and upholstery to make skirts, vests and shorts. I didn’t have a sewing machine yet, so I taught myself how to sew everything by hand with needle and thread. I learned how to do minor alterations, sew patches on ripped jeans, replace buttons and learned how to sew a darning stitch to repair holes in socks. I was hooked.
When I was 12, I asked my mother to buy me a sewing machine and at that time we couldn’t afford one, but my mother was very thrifty and checked out every garage sale in our neighborhood until she found an affordable one for $10. There were no instructions, so I learned by trial and error. I practiced every free day that I could. It was the most thrilling and crazy process I think my family thought I was a mad scientist of sorts.
I learned that having a skill like sewing could make me some money, my neighbors paid me to make simple repairs it wasn’t a lot of money, but I thought it was the greatest thing ever. I thought this was really cool that I have a repair job. I remember asking my mother for a Vogue magazine so I could see all the beautiful clothes the designers were creating, I thought how amazing it would be to make clothes for people.
When I started high school, I took sewing as an elective all four years and excelled at it. I found sewing exhilarating and fun, I could cut a pattern out and sew it up perfectly without reading the directions, this drove my sewing teacher insane. We had many arguments about reading the directions, my defense for this was if the results came out the same does it really make a difference if you sew by the directions? I learned later when I went to college that it really does matter.
My college years were eye opening and amazing. Being in an environment where creativity is encouraged really gets you out of your comfort zone and lets you freely express yourself. I was able to hone my skills with professionals who challenged me to never hold back on the creative process. One of the most important things I learned in school was to always remain true to my design aesthetic. That lesson has led me to become the type of designer I am today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is no such thing as a smooth road to achieving your dream. I found myself working in several different industries before I was actually able to turn my kraft into a career. What I mean is, everyone has bills to pay and I was no different.
When I actually started working in my field, I held several management positions for a large retailer. I had the ambition, drive, and a great work ethic and I was very successful in my role. What’s interesting about working for someone else is that when you’re in that fast-paced achievement zone thinking that you’re doing well financially, you forget that in all actuality you really aren’t the one making the money. You’re working very hard for someone else’s dream.
I was not financially secure enough during my retail tenure to attempt open my own company, I had the drive and ability, but it still took me 9 years to finally focus on my own dream.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the luxury segment of fashion, I see a shift towards more sustainability driven by consumer demand. I hear and read the stories about how bad the fashion industry is on not being sustainable. I know our industry can and will put systems in place to do better.
I also see the ability of more technology being embedded into garments.
I see the luxury segment facing a shift in the demographic of consumers, with Millennials and Gen Z leading a growing share of luxury spending, they are demanding more personalization and tailored experiences. I’m already seeing this shift with my clients.
I’m starting to hear about the design shift from some of my colleagues and other designers who are adding volume to apparel designs.
