We were lucky to catch up with Sona Gevorkyan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a licensed architect in California, with my own practice, Sona Gevorkyan Architecture Office. I also teach architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. I am fortunate to be able to do both. Practicing architecture keeps me grounded in the physical realm, while teaching keeps me updated on current architectural discourse and technologies, interface with young creative energy, embrace a spirit of experimentation and conceptual exploration.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Lately, I’ve delved into the realm of image-based AI, a venture that has significantly enriched both my professional and academic pursuits. Initially, my engagement with Midjourney was driven by the desire to stay updated. Yet, as I delved deeper, I found myself hooked to its ability to swiftly generate visual references. This tool serves as a means to delve into my own aesthetic inclinations; it’s a method through which I can better comprehend and refine my own artistic preferences.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I see the numerous ethical concerns surrounding AI, including its potential to surpass or deceive us. However, I am an optimist and want to view it as a friend rather than a foe, at least for the time being. Since its all changing so fast, I am choosing to focus on the current, and currently, its a world for me to escape, my happy place. When the outside world is too gloomy I can type imagine and play with flowers, ruffles and I can ask it to take me to Oaxaca or Marfa.
