We were lucky to catch up with Solomon Lewis III recently and have shared our conversation below.
Solomon , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I was always intrigued by photography at a young age; I would read through photography books and just imagine how the experience must have been. At some point down the line, I picked up a camera, and ever since I have been traveling and practicing my skills! I feel like the best thing I could have done to speed it all up would have been to practice my editing skills and overall post-processing ability. These skills are the most essential component of what I do in my everyday work; nature photography is an uncontrollable environment, and not every trip is gonna go perfectly so the ability to maximize my efforts really helps! The only obstacle that has kept me from learning more is time, it’s the one thing that you have to wait on!

Solomon , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into photography as a hobby initially and over time it grew into a full-blown passion; eventually, photography has become my first business and I hope to grow it into my full-time job! I currently partner with companies for product shoots and sell my landscape prints online. I believe my attention to detail sets me apart from others, ensuring high-quality services are curated for each client every time. I am most proud of my recent work from my trip to Colorado, I feel like I truly captured my perspective in each photo, and the stories they tell are just as grand.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was, ” I can fix this in post-processing.” Post-processing is essentially the act of enhancing the raw photo using various creative tools such as Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. While this works wonders on a small amount of work, when you take thousands of photos it turns into an issue. I found this out the hard way during a summer trip to Colorado; when I checked back I had taken over 1500 pictures and many of them were taken in bad light conditions. It greatly affected my workflow, and in the end, I learned to take my time and plan it right!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me as an artist is the ability to show my perspective on the world in a medium that never ages. The beauty of photography is the ability to take one photo and tell a timeless story that unfolds in the minds of each viewer. I genuinely love that everyone that views my work sees my account in their unique way, it is very exciting to be able to share my adventures!
