We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Solange McKenzie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Solange, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Honestly, no, I don’t wish I started sooner or later. I believe things happen in each person’s own time. Specifically for me as a Tall creative encouraging other tall women to love themselves and their height, I needed to become confident in my body myself. Even though the journey of self-love is personal and on-going, I need to go through my stages in order to share my experiences and help my tall community as they experience their journey. When I started as a content creator/blogger, I had just graduated from college and I was finally starting to feel like I had found who I was and what I loved, education and fashion. So, while I was looking for jobs in the education field, I still wanted to nurture my love of fashion. I started off with youtube, I didn’t feel like that really fit, then I created my blog, and now I focus on posting for my blog, Instagram and the occasional TikTok. The only thing I would’ve changed about my experience is being more consistent about my niche, Tall Fashion. At the start, I wasn’t consistent with it, but once I figured out what my mission was, I found my way back.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a content creator who focuses on empowering tall girls and women through fashion. I also like to sprinkle in sustainable fashion and Black Girl in luxury fashion/lifestyle. For my community of tall women, I share clothing brands that cater to tall bodies, I have a guide that lists all these brands and as I find out about more, the guide gets updated… plus it’s free to access! I share ways to style garments that are from retailers that don’t carry tall clothes. I share motivation and inspiration for tall women while also being a voice for the tall community by encouraging discussion about what it means to be tall, talking about what we like/don’t like and what we need from the fashion industry and the people who interact with us in life.
I also love to debunk the idea that Black girls/women aren’t worthy of luxury. Society has continued to teach us that we don’t deserve to experience luxury (or a happy and quality life). I want to show that we absolutely are deserving of it and we should enjoy it unapologetically! With that being said, I also share how to afford luxury in ways that don’t break the bank.
For sustainability, I show how important it is to invest in quality that will last! Whether it’s through thrifting, luxury or buying clothes made for the tall body, we should also be mindful of how we consume. So by focusing on quality clothes that fit us and make us happy, taking opportunities to thrift/buy pre-loved, and encouraging my community to think about how what we buy actually fits our lives, we can be fashionable and maintain the planet that keeps us alive.

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My number one mission, that is above everything else, is teaching tall women that their height is beautiful and something to be proud of! I say this all the time, growing up, I wish I had a whole community of tall sisters and aunties pouring positivity and fashion tips into me. So my goal is to be your Tall and Bougie big sister!

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Above anything, respect creatives. We pour so much time and effort into our crafts in the same way any other profession does. For the communities that look to us, you see the finished product. What you don’t see is the planning, the process of recording/photographing, the editing, the times spent writing blog posts, the research, the analyzing our content in order to make it better, etc. All of that goes into us producing the finished product that you see. For the brands that want to work with us as content creators, respect will often look like paying us what we are worth. Again, we put a lot into our work and that deserves compensation.
