We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sol Bontemps. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sol below.
Alright, Sol thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My ma jokes the minute I came out of the womb, lol. Honestly it was when I saw her drawing her comic “Frogman” about a frog that was struck by lightning that later becomes a superhero that defends his ponds as well as other ponds from evil such as slugs and rouge fungus. I pretty much picked up a pencil afterwards and never stopped.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I pretty much got into freelancing just by promoting my work on instagram back in the early days and networking. I’ve work on several comic projects, illustrations as well as helping put work on an animated project that appeared on adult swim. Granted it was at 3 AM but it’s still really cool.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Oooh boy not a big fan to be honest. It never made any sense to me. It was another get rich quick scheme where folks would sell an average drawing of an ape for tens of thousands of dollars and only for most of that art to become worthless now. I’m all for learning new things and am open to new ideas but that was an immediate scam.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Be careful not to lead yourself to burnout because it’s very difficult to recover from. I worked on a projects back to back before Covid hit and I became incredibly overwhelmed and stressed. It actually made me almost quit art altogether. Some projects continued on and others fell through but yet I felt shame because I didn’t draw for a long time due to the burnout and yet I couldn’t bring myself to draw. Now I’m mostly recovered and working on a really fun project that’s taking a lot of time but at least I’m enjoying art again.
