Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sohrab Forouzesh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sohrab, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Stand up is an interesting craft to master, because you have to put yourself on stage to grow. Writing is important, but if you’re not comfortable on stage you’ll struggle. I talk to people all the time who want to start out in comedy, and they will spend time on every aspect of it, but avoid the stage due to nerves. The nerves never go away, you just learn to manage them. And the best way to manage them is with stage time. Find a local open mic and do it consistently until you’ve grown the confidence needed to progress.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been obsessed with stand up since I was a kid. I memorized entire specials and my dream was to be a comedian. When I started attending college at Western Michigan University, I met some like minded friends who had the same obsession. But unlike me they had already performed and started learning the craft. They showed me the process, and ever since then it’s been a major part of my life.
Currently I live in Chicago and travel the country to perform. My goal is to work behind the scenes as a writer, because crafting a good joke is an extremely satisfying feeling that is impossible to replicate.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being a comedian is being a gambling addict. We are addicted to the rush that comes from writing a joke and seeing it do well on stage. That’s the reward we all chase.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
People don’t realize the amount of rejection that goes into pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. I don’t have a specific story, as I’ve learned to forget about the failures and move quickly unto the next thing. That’s what resilience is to me, staying focused.
