Sofiya, appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
I got my degree in Fashion Merchandising from Kaplan Career Institute and my degree in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. I did a lot of fashion shows including Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week.
I am now running a boutique that includes handmade jewelry and boutique items in store at the Homestead Painted Tree and jewelry at the Steel City Craft Emporium. I also have my online shop which is primarily handmade jewelry.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a designer and boutique owner based in Pittsburgh.
I don’t do a lot of custom work anymore but I do take orders for prom gowns. Each year I take at least one last minute prom order from a girl who runs into a problem. For example: I had a client who ordered a dress and the company sent it to the wrong address. The company was willing to send another but it wouldn’t have arrived in time for prom. She asked me a week before prom to make her a dress. I was so happy I was able to help her.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Consistency in social media has been the most effective strategy for growing my clientele. I never thought that I would be so concerned about what to post next. Lol
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Honestly, Uber has been so helpful. I will Uber as a side job. When I see sometimes I need for the business I know that is how long I need to drive in order to pay for it. Once I hit the set goal I can get items for my business. I hope to get some grants in the future but right now I am 100% self funded.
