Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sofija. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sofija, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I ask myself this question often. Pursuing this kind of career is not an easy task, but I know it’s something I cannot give up on. I’ve always known that this is what I want to do with my life. It’s always been more than just the career I want to pursue; it’s been a part of my identity as a human. Because of this feeling I can’t shake, I do feel happy with the choice I’ve made, and I think it would be much harder to have a “regular” job for a different set of reasons. It’s not easy but it’s what makes me feel the most fulfilled at the end of the day.
Sofija, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Sofija, and I am a recording artist, performer, instrumentalist, and producer. I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember, so I have really always felt that pursuing this kind of career is the path I am meant to be on. I make mostly R&B music and I want new fans to be able to find comfort in the relatability in the subject matter of my songs.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Come to our shows, stream/share our music and add it to your playlists, and just check on your artist friends! Some of these actions may seem so small but they really matter. Collectively, all of these things are so beneficial to us and help us build our community and spread our music to larger audiences.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The biggest struggle I’ve faced when surrounded by mostly non-creatives is feeling like I am not honoring my true identity. In a society where most artists need another job or form of income to survive while still dedicating themselves to their craft, it can be physically and mentally demanding to spread oneself and energy in so many different directions. Almost every other artist I know has other jobs/pursuits to help them stay afloat, and I’ve found it very difficult to feel like I am giving myself to my passion, 100% when I am also having to invest time into another endeavor that I don’t deeply connect with. I share this in hopes of letting other independent artists know that they’re not alone if they are going through something similar, and it doesn’t seem like their peers outside of this industry can relate.
