We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sofiia Chubko a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sofiia, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I recently attended a birthday celebration of the owner of a local boutique. This awesome woman is pregnant with her second child, another baby boy. So when she came up to my table looking to get her forever bracelet, she asked me to help her create something meaningful and special. Right there, I knew exactly what she wanted. Two heart charms made out of fresh water pearl, each one of them representing each baby. We connected the charms together as a symbol of two brothers being there for each other. This moment was absolutely precious and I was so grateful to be a part of it.
Sofiia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Getting started with permanent jewelry was one of the fastest and most sure decisions I have made. As I was looking to get matching with my daughter, watching all the videos on instagram of other artists making the jewelry, I was falling in love with an idea. So one Sunday night, I called my husband and said: “You will think I’ve lost my mind, but I want to do this and I will do anything to learn how to do this.” And after hard research, discussion and comparing, I ordered all the supplies. And let me tell you, I am so glad I was brave enough to start this. I guess the time when I was a teenager and was crafting my own felted earring made an impact on my today’s interests. It is so interesting that even as a permanent jewelry industry is at a high peak right, there is still quite a few people that don’t know what it’s about. So let me explain. Permanent jewelry is a custom fit piece that does not have a clasp. You choose a chain, you can add a connector or a charm, I fit it to you and we weld it together. So ultimately, it does not come off. The beauty of forever jewelry is that there is no awkward sizing, its custom fit, you don’t have to worry about losing it, it matches every style and you don’t have to worry about putting it on or off – there is no fighting with the clasp. What I think is amazing about permanent jewelry is customer experience. The customization, the attention the customer gets while getting their piece and the whole unique process of the welding – there is nothing like that.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
There is a saying: growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone. In any business, to be successful, you need to find your customer, you need to get out and socialize, to connect with people. Because no one wants to spend their money with grey wall, but with a person they can relate to. And for me, that was the hardest part. I am more on a quite side and not your social butterfly. But I knew I wanted to make it work, I wanted to share my love for jewelry with others, which meant pushing my own limits and working on bettering myself. And it has really paid off. I work closely with local businesses, boutiques and shops, we had a few great events together and I have more scheduled out.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There is nothing better than a happy smiling face of the customer. It’s that moment when they get their own personal piece of jewelry, they find their chain and get unique connector, everything comes together and they are just glowing with happiness. It brings me great pleasure making matching bracelets, whether its for girlfriends or mom and daughter. I think its such an amazing way to show that special bond and share that unique experience.
