We recently connected with Sofía Perez Teuffer and have shared our conversation below.
Sofía , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
As an artist, I firmly believe that our kind possesses a unique perspective. We perceive and interpret the world with greater depth, which fuels our passion and excellence in our craft. I believe that the most profound art emerges from personal struggles and experiences. In my own journey, every risk, every challenge, and every tear shed has propelled me towards new creations and a clearer vision for my career and life as a whole.
This interview marks the first time I openly discuss the significance of mental health, self-love, and self-discipline in shaping one’s life. Throughout my life, I’ve battled with depression and anxiety, although people often only see the success without knowing the story that preceded it. Growth, in my case, has emerged from pain, sleepless nights filled with self-doubt, and the solitude of continuing forward despite being abandoned by many along the way. Yet, I never lost sight of my identity and the person I aspire to be.
I’ve learned that if I neglect my mental and physical well-being, no one else will prioritize it for me. Life has never been and will never be easy, but it becomes my responsibility to transform a challenging existence into a beautiful one that holds meaning — a life that inspires and serves others. Had my own journey been devoid of hardship, I wouldn’t possess the capacity to create and share meaningful art.
I firmly believe that everyone’s backstory holds the greatest power to touch hearts. By understanding the entirety of someone’s journey, including the struggles endured amidst the sunlit moments, we gain a profound appreciation. In my own life, the experiences and challenges I’ve faced have provided me with a unique perspective on the world, enabling me to visually create and contribute towards its betterment. Without undergoing pain and solitude, I would likely view the world through a simplistic lens. Thus, I am grateful for my struggles, as they have shaped my worldview.
I genuinely believe that each artist, including myself, has the ability to make a significant impact through their creations, influencing lives and generations.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sofía Perez Teuffer, and I am from Mexico City. Ever since I was young, I have been passionate about storytelling and films, particularly those that touch the heart, not just the mind. As a child, I used to write numerous poems and small stories, acting them out and envisioning how they would appear on screen. Initially, I aspired to become an actress, but over time, I realized that my true calling was in directing. It took me a few years to come to this realization.
When I was 16, I worked at a magazine while still attending high school, as I disliked academics and struggled with it. I simultaneously applied to colleges, doubting I would be accepted anywhere. Fortunately, I discovered a school in Los Angeles that catered to artists with visions like mine, emphasizing the creative side of the brain. I was accepted, and after graduating high school, I packed my bags and moved to Los Angeles, where my creative journey truly began.
In Los Angeles, I encountered people who forever changed my life. Despite being young and scared in a foreign country away from home, I carried with me nothing but a suitcase, a backpack, and a dream to make a significant impact and see my name on the screen. Step by step, I embarked on various projects, met new people, and experienced different things. Along the way, I proved myself wrong numerous times, especially in doubting my own capabilities.
At my second job, I had two female bosses who profoundly influenced me. They shared their wisdom and worldviews when I had yet to develop a vision for myself. Each job and person I encountered led me to the next opportunity and shaped me into the person I am today and the person I am becoming. I have been fortunate to collaborate with incredible individuals, not just colleagues and creatives, but genuine human beings who have inspired and molded me.
Currently, I have the privilege of working with the amazing producer and director, Frank Ariza. I learn from him every day, and he encourages me to be true to myself and not imitate others. Alongside other completed and ongoing projects, I am thrilled and proud to announce that after seven years of hard work, I have just finished filming my first movie for Disney+ with an exceptional production team in Spain. It is astonishing to think that my journey has taken me from Mexico to LA and from LA to Spain. I am uncertain where life will lead me next, but I am ready to embrace every step that brings me closer to creating the life I envision each day.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most profound aspect of being an artist and a creative is the ability to perceive the world through a unique lens, transcending conventional boundaries. It is in this realm that we are granted the privilege to share our intricate perspectives with the world, illuminating hidden depths and unveiling new dimensions of existence.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I yearn for the wisdom to understand that true intelligence does not require the mastery of all knowledge, for it is in embracing our limitations that we unlock the potential for growth. If only I had possessed unwavering faith in myself during moments of doubt, when others failed to see my worth. And if only I had recognized that within every challenge lies a solution, and every seemingly insignificant task holds the power to shape the trajectory of my career.
