We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sofia Muzio . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sofia below.
Sofia , appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
The most importar thing that I found to be successful in all my projects was: PASSION. When you are asking to yourself “what i am doing here? Why I am not at home? What send me to do this?” That’s my alert 🚨 so, stop, look at your present and future. Are you enjoying the most of the time? Where the time passes quickly, there is the place.
Nothing will be easy, everything will have risks, but what will make a difference is the passion you have for what you are doing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I was born in Argentina in 1990. I moved to the United States, Georgia 2 years ago. I started my career as a ceramist 13 years ago in San Fernando, Buenos Aires, Argentina. It all started as a hobby, then it became a passion and I decided to spread it to many people. What I enjoy doing the most in my entire life is teaching, explaining and introducing people to new worlds. Combined this with my love for ceramics, it has led me to open a creative space in Argentina in 2018 to receive people who want to learn how to make ceramics in a pleasant and calm environment. In the meantime, I continued to produce my ceramic pieces, but everything in my career began to revolve around the classes. Enjoy watching many students grow, some open their own ceramic shops, others study the career of ceramist professionally. A satisfaction that only some understand. Then, going through COVID and my trip to the United States, I decided to reopen my creative space in a small town called Hogansville in Georgia. My project began as a studio to make my pieces and sell them in other places, but then I turn to a place where I receive people to learn ceramics. With a lot of fear at the beginning because of my original language Spanish, not being able to explain myself correctly in front of the class in English, many personal prejudices, but having crossed that line that stopped me, I managed to move forward enjoying what I like to do so much and simply giving the best of myself. I managed to get enough students to pay my rent and my supplies.
I opened a group of Spanish speakers who wanted to make ceramics and learn in Spanish.
In short, everything has been God’s blessing that gives me the strength and the possibility to move forward. But above all, when we are using the gifts that God gave us, we lose the notion of time, of money, nothing can stop you, not even having another native language.
I work on ceramic products with natural texture and colors. I like to bring organic pieces to the houses, pieces that attract attention for their originality in front of the Market.
I got together with friends who do other things, such as a friend who sells plants, I make pots that fit perfectly with their plants. There have been many years of challenges, but above all to enjoy and take advantage of my passion and love for art.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
One of the things was invested money in Ads. But, the second and no less important was: Provide an unforgettable experience to every person who buys me a product or service. That’s the perfect marketing for everyone. They will return, and not only that, they will also bring others, and they will talk about you when possible. What could be better?
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When the day came to give my first Spanish class in my studio, I prepared myself with all the words written on a blackboard and put it close in case I forgot something at the time of the class. I memorized every word, I got a little nervous, but I was ready to receive my new student and teach her ceramics in English. In my mind I didn’t understand when and how I had reached this point. How I had decided to submit to this, because clearly this was not my comfort zone. Despite all that, there was that person entering the studio and I said “Hi, welcome in” a few minutes after talking to her, she told me that she also speaks in Spanish, that her family came from Mexico. Which was a break for me, I hugged her and told her about my nerves to receive her, we laughed. Then I explained everything in English, just as I had studied it. Yes, I could have spoken in Spanish and gone to my comfort zone, but I forced myself to remain uncomfortable, because now I had one thing in my favor, this person spoke both languages!
