We recently connected with Sofi Melvin and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sofi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
I believe that much of wedding planning requires two main concepts: love and wisdom. The entire purpose of a wedding is to celebrate the love between two individuals, and that often gets lost in the details and overwhelm of the wedding planning process. My goal is to keep my couples’ love stories at the core of every planning decision we make together. Wisdom is not only knowledge and experience, but the thoughtful application of that knowledge. Wisdom is vital to planning and executing a well-organized, beautiful, fun, and personal wedding.
Combine that with the wonderful play on my name that “philosofi” is and the reminder to celebrate the little things along with the big, and you get Philosofi Celebrations!
Sofi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! I’m Sofi- the owner and lead planner with Philosofi Celebrations. I help big-hearted couples plan purposeful weddings through love, wisdom, and personal & intentional details! Most days you can find me at my computer, working on timelines and design boards or emailing vendors and clients. When I’m not busy planning weddings for Kansas City couples, you can find me listening to podcasts, watching TV with my husband, trying out new coffee shops, or making stupid faces at my daughter.
I was always the “birthday party” kid growing up. I had my theme, location, and activities for my 11th birthday party planned out before I could blow out the last candle on my 10th birthday. That passion for a cohesive theme and solid plan stuck with me through college and my first big-kid job until the stars aligned for me to take the leap and start my own business. I dove headfirst into every course, mastermind, and podcast I could find about weddings and event planning and got hands-on experience with another planner. I started booking clients shortly after and have only fallen more in love since!
Currently, we offer wedding management, partial wedding planning, and full-service wedding planning. Our clients have big-hearts and care deeply about their loved ones, and that is reflected in their planning and design choices. Think: great food. amazing entertainment, and a thoughtfully planned and executed timeline so they get face-to-face time with all of their guests.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I just welcomed my first child in August, so flexibility has been hugely important to me. Obviously, as a business owner, I get to set my own hours, but I’m dreaming of when I’m able to take on only the projects that fuel me creatively. The goal is to have a small team that takes on most of our weddings while I take on the full-service planning and design clients that truly excite me.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Vendor referrals! The Kansas City wedding vendor community is truly amazing, and I think most of us depend on referrals to book new clients. Referrals from venues, photographers, or even fellow wedding planners are invaluable and always put a smile o my face.
