We were lucky to catch up with So Hyun Park recently and have shared our conversation below.
So Hyun, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
When I worked at Bigstar, I was fortunate to have amazing bosses. They always respected my opinions, gave me the time I needed, and instilled in me the belief that I could succeed. Their leadership left a lasting impact on me, and they inspired me to strive to become that kind of person for others.

So Hyun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a motion designer with experience working with companies like Google, Apple, and various design studios. My journey into motion design began during my graphic design studies when I developed a fascination with movement. This passion led me to pursue a career in motion design after graduation.
One of my biggest strengths is my illustration skills, which have been a significant advantage in securing various projects and clients. In addition to illustration, I’m also skilled in cel animation and proficient in using After Effects, further setting me apart in the field.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My first side job was working on a small 3D project for a professor while I was still a student. After that, I couldn’t take on side jobs for a while due to visa issues. Once my visa allowed for freelancing, I started taking on projects consistently. My work with Apple was one such project that came through freelancing.
I mostly get work through referrals from friends, job postings I come across, or clients finding me through my portfolio. Overall, I’m really happy with my freelancing career and the experience I’ve built over time.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Last year, I went through a challenging period with some health issues that required me to take a break from work. When I was ready to return, I felt apprehensive about whether I could perform as well and as quickly as I did before.
Fortunately, my health improved faster than I anticipated, and I was able to resume work without major issues. I believe that going through this difficulty has helped me grow and become more mature. I’m thankful for the resilience I’ve gained from these experiences.
