We were lucky to catch up with Smirk Tv recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Smirk, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Going down the path of entertainment can be very challenging and risky. I’ve put a lot of friendships and relationships on hold to chase after my goals. Whether it’s picking up last minute to go live with some strangers in LA that I’ve never met (shoutout Ish and Con!). Or throwing my first comedy show with no prior experience to booking anything. It’s all about the risks and the journey with whatever goals you’re trying to reach. In the end I think you should just go for it instead of wondering “what if”.
Smirk, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a comedian with a voice that throws everyone off. Not just my “voice” in comedy but like the actual tone of my voice. I Bring a different flavor than all the other straight white male comedians in the game. There’s too damn many of us that you have to stand out to grab people’s attention, and I definitely think I bring that element to my comedy. I’m most proud of building a following independently and doing it my way. A lot of people along your journey will tell you that you need to do this or that, but in reality you should listen to the advice think on it but do what’s in your best interest. Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
First of all just don’t listen to non creatives When it pertains to your goals and ambitions. If your boss at Home Depot doesn’t think your music is good or your videos are funny quit simply f*ck them. Anyone for that matter that tries to kill your creativity and goals. Whether that’s your family during the holidays that you see twice a year, or your friend who just got a promotion at his sales job. There’s probably a time they had some sort of dream and didn’t have the balls to go after it. Now they’re emptying their own insecurities out on you. You have to just keep your head up and go for it. You have to be your biggest supporter and believe in the dream before anyone else will!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Honestly I just went for it. It was a lot of trial and error. A lot of videos that didn’t get any traction, and just figuring out what goes viral on the internet. I got with a like 5 other guys in Nashville who were the only ones making videos in the city at the time, and we started gaining some traction. You have to play the game at first. Try to incorporate your own unique style while also following trends and topics that are relevant at the time. I can really only give advice for comedy videos, but starting off pick a topic that’s very trendy or newsworthy and just make it funny.
