We were lucky to catch up with Sloane Teagle recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sloane thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am definitely happier as an artist. I can’t imagine being anything else. There are moments when it’s rough and I wish I would’ve been a lawyer or a doctor because it just seems easier, more stable, but I wouldn’t be fulfilled in any other profession. I’ve been toying with the idea of retiring from acting. I’ve acted since I was a child and was feeling down about not advancing professionally at the rate that I want to as an actress. Rejection is never fun and it feels personal when you’re constantly sharing bits of yourself and your artistry and it feels like there’s no return on investment. But at the end of the day, I love performing. I love telling stories! I love the feeling of creating with others and I plan on doing so for the rest of my life. I’m still exploring other creative avenues, like my EDI work, directing, and producing, but at the end of the day I’m just a showgirl with a dream!
Sloane , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Houston-based actress, performing artist, and theater practitioner with a strong interest in creating thought-provoking, inclusive art through collaboration and devising. I’ve been performing my entire life (shoutout to all my hyper-active, introverted hotties out there!!), but was formally introduced to theater at around nine years old through The Ensemble Theatre’s Young Performers Program and went on to become a company member of Broadway Bound Youth Musical Theater Company (now Moore Vision Entertainment) where I performed in several productions and taught for the company’s youth summer camps. I’m a graduate of Texas State University’s BFA Theatre Program and hold an MFA in Physical Theater from Mississippi University for Women and Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy. Through my studies with Accademia dell’Arte, I’ve been an artist in residence with FLIC Scuola di Circo (Torino, Italy), Familie Flöz (Berlin, Germany), and Divadlo Continuo Theatre (Malovice, Czech Republic). I am currently a resident company member of The Broad’s Way in Houston, the Artistic Inclusion and Community Engagement Director at Main Street Theater, and a freelance artist here in Houston!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m currently focused on making the Houston Theater community more inclusive to ALL artists. I want to create opportunities for marginalized folx in this creative space. We have so many stories to offer and such a crazy amount of talent in Houston that has been overlooked for far too long. My mission is to help create a brave, equitable space for people of color to have community and be heard as artists.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I have a hard time with the word resilient. Often people of color, specifically women of color, more specifically Black women are deemed resilient, but at what cost? We are asked to bend and bounce back from adversity time after time. I no longer hold space for resilience in my life. I have entered my soft girl era and maybe making the decision to live this way is my biggest act of resilience.
