We were lucky to catch up with Sloane Coe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sloane, thanks for joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I discovered cosmetic tattooing and I instantly knew I had a love for it. Once I decided to change career paths, I did not waste any time. In less than six months, I quit my job, started a new career, moved to a new city, and opened my own business. I felt like I finally found what I was meant to do in life. A lot of work was put into getting to where I am now. I had a lot of sleepless nights and moments where I doubted myself. It is so scary to take risks in life. I knew even if I took a risk and failed, it would not necessarily set me back in life. That is because during that time I was not content in life at all. I wanted so much more for myself. Then, I also had the thought, “but what if? What if I am successful?” And that is what kept me going.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a cosmetic tattoo artist who specializes in permanent makeup. My services include microblading, powder brows, combo brows, lash line enhancement, and lip blush. I think something that sets me apart from other artists is that I offer all services on my own. Starting my own business is definitely what I am most proud of. Having my own business and clients coming to Coe Cosmetics means so much to me. I will always be so thankful for each client. My business is the most important thing to me and I will always have a special place in my heart for the people who helped me along the way, especially my clients.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing a clientele has been social media. When I moved to Austin, I did not know anyone. I would search the location in Austin, TX on Instagram and follow every account that popped up. I followed a lot of beauty accounts located in Austin which I think was helpful as well. Most people who are into facials and injections are also into permanent makeup. Surprisingly, I got a lot of new followers by doing this. I also ran Instagram ads on and off for the first 6 months of being open. I take a lot of time to capture good photos of my work for my followers to see. I love creating videos as well and I think it helps me stand out. I will record the whole session of doing someone’s lips or brows and edit the video so viewers can see what the process is actually like.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first opened my business, everything was great, but I have learned that every business has slow months. The first time I experienced slow times as a new business owner was very hard. I was really tough on myself and thought it was my work. I have now learned that it is normal and I try to appreciate the slow times. The busy times will come, but you have to be patient. I think every business owner goes through this and does not talk about it much. For me, the hardest part of having my own business is not knowing what the future holds. When you work a corporate job you know how much money you will get that month, and the next, and the next, etc. For me, I do not know what my future months will contain. I think that is the scariest part about it. I just try to stay positive and continue to do my best.
