We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SLIKKMOUTH WAYNE a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
SLIKKMOUTH, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I think the reason who I am today is because Ive been taking risk at a young age and I think because of the circumstances based around me everything happens for a reason. After high school me and a couple of friends quit our jobs to travel the country. We left Texas and went to Flagstaff, Arizona and that to me was a really really big move but because of the things I went through on my journey I had a strong mentality and I knew that it was all or nothing, I hated where I was at, I felt like I was hindered from the world and so many more opportunities and I had nothing more to lose. There is about 15 states that I haven’t been to, i learned so much about life and myself and I’ve met some pretty amazing people and been to some pretty dope places and made memories with the people that I met along my journey and that’s priceless. Even recently I relocated closer to my engineer to pursue my music so I think that if we don’t take risk we just become comfortable in life and I want to be comfortable but at the same time I just feel like I work really hard and I’ve put in the work, I look nothing like what I’ve been thru but I deserve all the finer things in life and everyday I’m blessed and grateful to where I am today but I always want more for myself always.

SLIKKMOUTH, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is SLIKKMOUTHWAYNE, I’m a new upcoming rapper out of Houston, I’m Texas raised. I started writing little raps when I was young and then I was actually rapping in a group in high school called TD shout out to those guys, but I didn’t take my craft very serious then. I started to take my career seriously in 2020. I love writing music it’s my passion and writing music has also been very therapeutic for me a at times and it really pulled me out of dark times and I would just sit in my room or my car and listen to instrumentals and write music, and eventually I started just writing everyday like it was my job bc I wanted my craft to be very special and unique and I wanted to make sure it could not be duplicated. I came up with the name SlikkMouth because of my raw lyricism and wordplay my flow transitions and the bars that I use and how I put them together , i feel like it’s a whole package and Wayne comes from my middle name. I think all of those factors play a big role into my style and my authenticity as a artist, I try to keep things new and interesting and fresh and I feel like I have my own lane that people have to tap into. I take my artistry and my pen very serious as any artist should. Currently I’m most proud of my 2nd music video I put out called “Gold” my newest single off my upcoming project “2020” this song is really just a message to stay resilient to anything and before I dropped that and “BALLIN” and the “3YearAnniversaryPack” there were just a lot of negative things that were happening and that were even hindering me from greater opportunities to advance in life, I overcame all the negativity and obstacles and “Gold” shine no matter what, is jus me putting everything in my music and also showing my fans where I was at mentally when I recorded this single.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I feel like basically I had to learn that history repeats itself. Just repeating the same type situations different scenarios i just got tired of dealing with things I didn’t have to deal with some people will just never change and your peers can play a big part of your elevation. I just learned to chase my dreams and the right people will come along..you have to eventually learn from your mistakes and but also correct the mistakes.

: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I think for years I have been seen, but not actually seen. Being overlooked left out or rejected. Me being a recording artist gives me a voice to be able to reach others. I’m definitely a survivor of my past, I was known by alot of people, but I don’t like using the word popular, but I always felt I was the OutKast. I just wanted to make a name for myself do something that I would be genuinely proud of, do something that was just me and my vision. I was never embraced the way my fans and supporters embrace me, and it feels amazing to have your talents noticed and embraced and also to be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. I want to be able to connect with people with similar past and just be able to show people no matter what you have been thru you have to stay strong never quit and just stay consistent at whatever you love, you can’t give up today because tomorrow may be the day you get that blessing you been praying for. I want to be one of the best artist in history to obviously do this and to be mentioned with some of the greatest to do this as well and music is just what I should’ve been doing a long time ago to be making living.
