We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Slikk Muzik. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Slikk below.
Slikk, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
My first real check made from the music business was on Ariana Grande 10 years ago back in 2013. I remember still working a public job at a local corporate bank in DFW when I got the call and opportunity to produce a song for Ariana from a living music legend by the name of Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. He gave me the opportunity to create this record from my home studio in my one bedroom apartment at that time. I also happened to end up running a fever and feeling horrible that same day coincidentally. I’ll never forget I left work early to go home, took some DayQuil and went right into my studio to begin working on this song. I had no idea what direction I would go but I followed my creative thoughts and it end up leading me to make a hit record called “Lovin it” for Ariana Grande off her #1 Global Billboard Yours Truly hit album along with Leon Thomas, Khris Riddick-Tines, Antonio Dixon and Babyface. That opportunity went on to get me my first major publishing deal in the music business which brought me off of my corporate bank job and changed my life. Until this day I do music for a living. I am forever grateful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got my musical gifts and talents from the church. I grew up as a church musician. I started out on drums at a very young age and then began learning piano as well as some guitar. I learned to play by ear first and later in life once I got in band learned how to read music correctly. But there is nothing like that organic “feel” of music over text book teaching. Some of my musical inspirations were Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and Timbaland because of their drum cadences. I have always been fascinated with hard hitting drums ever since I was a toddler. I began making beats for my peers in middle school, high school and college. I dropped out of college from playing football to pursue my music career full time. It wasn’t a good idea the way I did it and I wouldn’t encourage not to get your education first, but I was on w different mission and I knew my path of purpose was not ordinary. It may have taken 6 years to get there but I eventually did because I never gave up. I was focused, determined, relentless, consistent and stepped out on faith. I truly believe in myself and my brand.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to have the freedom to create freely and however you feel. As a creative it is so key to feel that freedom. If we are unable to pull from that place or freedom it will stagnate our ability to create our best art and if we can’t create our best art then what are we doing it for?
