We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SliKc a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
SliKc, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first time I knew I want to be a musician was early on in my life. I grow up singing and later on actually playing instruments. Then as I got older I stopped due to life issues and finding my way. Then that one day I join my cousin in a quartet group and found the passion for singing again. But 6 year after joining the group where I really started pushing myself to grow in this field.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The way I got into the music industry I am in now was, after joining our quartet group “Versetile”, we was introduced to “Soul Sessions”. A open mic “talent show. From there we were asked and introduced to sing in many different events, churches, open acts, etc. Through out our 8 years of performing I learn the business very well on how cut throat it can be, but also how rewarding it is as well. How a “no” at the time does not mean a “no” forever. That when one door closes another will be open. I learned that being humble will get you further than being cocky. But also be confident in what you do. Which i had to learn for myself. After all this time I had become a very well rounded musician. Not only can I sing, I can also play drums, play keyboard, bass, I produce and write for myself and other artist as well. That’s was also sets me aside from others because I’m multi talented I can offer so much. One of the things I am most proud of is that I have not given up on myself again. At time I want to quit but everytime I push through I am percented with another great opportunity to use my gifts. Another opportunity to grow.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story of my resilience is, as a group early on I was self conscious about my voice. I didn’t like how I sounded but people would always say I sounded great. So one day I really sat back and listened to myself and really was amazed. Especially when I created my first album. Learning to love my own sound and not caring what other thought is how I pushed through. Loving my creations for what they are and not trying to be like others but being like me.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One particular lesson I had to unlearn is saying Yes. Every person that comes up to you doesn’t need to get your services, especially for free. I’m not saying free events are bad but time and effort does cost for somethings. Now doing charity events and giving back, I don’t mind doing. But when people want you to sing for 3 to 4 hours with a full band but only want to pay $200 for everyone isn’t going to work. And that’s not just me. This is for other artist as well. We all work hard to profect and provide a product and a imagine that surpasses many big name artist. But people will short hand ‘us’ and pay big money for other mediocre performances. This is my career as well and I want to receive what I deserve as well as the musicians I bring along with me because they work hard for this too.
