We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Slick GoHam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Slick below.
Hi Slick, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
In the recent years I’ve been able to successfully merge Trap & R&B into my own Club Music, it started with remixing different songs and wanting to give different feels.
This has also allowed me to have a different approach when making music as well, different melodies, flow, and baselines play in my head daily.
My most recent highlight example of this would be my most recent club project “Sorry4The8 – 3” which is perfect mix of trap sounds, r&b sounds, and club based sound, also this project was featured on Bandcamp’s “Best Club Music Of May/June”.
Slick, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a child I was always into dance based music, from artists like Michael Jackson to the Baltimore Club sounds that I would grow up on, would always here club music on the radio in the morning going to school, and every Friday night. 2008-2009 I got more into the Baltimore Club Dances, learning from friends who were already into it at the time.
Late 2010 would be when I started to learn and teach myself how to make my own club music using FL Studio, the first 2 years would be me mainly taking things I liked from other songs and incorporating into my own, I would gain lots of good attention and respect of the club scene as well as in other places outside of Baltimore.
I think what sets me apart from most other club artists/producers is I’m only going to make something that I like and not what someone else wants or expects from me when it comes to putting my own tunes and projects together.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Keeping a positive attitude, keeping certain boundaries, and of course communication, everyone may not see eye to eye at all times and that’s ok, sometimes you have to lead by example or try to make it easy for another person to chime in.
Everyone on a team is their own person and should be treated as such.
A team must always have a goal and milestones set to work towards as well as stay motivated.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Collaborating with other artists is definitely a great way to get more people looking your way, especially when you bring something different to the table that can’t be replicated or found elsewhere, pretty much being yourself and putting a lot of “you” into the craft that you share to the world.
