We were lucky to catch up with Sl Studios La recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi SL Studios LA, thanks for joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
In the beauty industry, it’s not uncommon to hear the phrase, “That’s not a real job.” As someone who has transitioned from the structured environment of a law firm to the vibrant world of nails and beauty, The girls from SL Studios LA have faced this skepticism firsthand. I (Sophia) remember when I was just 12 years old, passionately doing nails and dreaming of a future where I could be my own boss. A family member once told me that pursuing nails wouldn’t lead to a stable career with good benefits. That moment stuck with me, planting seeds of doubt about my aspirations.
However, my journey has taught me that the beauty industry is not just a hobby; it’s a thriving profession that requires skill, creativity, and dedication. At SL Studios LA, we’ve all encountered clients who view our work as merely a pastime rather than a legitimate career. Yet, these interactions only fuel our determination to prove that we can turn our passions into successful livelihoods.
The beauty industry is a dynamic field that offers countless opportunities for growth and self-expression. It’s a place where creativity meets entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to build their brands and connect with clients on a personal level. Each nail we paint, each client we serve, is a testament to our hard work and commitment to our craft.
We are not just artists; we are business owners, marketers, and customer service experts. Our work requires continuous learning, adapting to trends, and understanding the needs of our clients. The beauty industry is a legitimate career path that can provide financial stability and personal fulfillment.
At SL Studios LA, we support one another in our journeys. We share our successes, learn from our challenges, and celebrate the milestones that come with being our own bosses. Together, we are proving that the beauty industry is a viable and rewarding career choice.
So, to anyone who has ever doubted the legitimacy of our work, we invite you to see the passion and dedication that goes into every service we provide. The beauty industry is not just a job; it’s a calling. We are here to inspire others to follow their dreams, regardless of what others may say. Let’s continue to uplift one another and show the world that we can indeed turn our passions into successful careers.
Together, we are redefining what it means to have a “real job.”
SL Studios LA, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At SL Studios LA, we pride ourselves on being more than just a beauty studio; we are a sanctuary for our clients. In a world where self-care often takes a backseat, we create a safe space where individuals can come to relax, unwind, and feel valued.
Our studio is a welcoming environment where clients can express themselves freely. We understand that for many, visiting us is not just about getting their hair or nails done; it’s about finding a place where they feel accepted and understood. We listen to our clients, offering a judgment-free zone where they can share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
While we may not hold therapy licenses, we often find ourselves stepping into the role of unlicensed therapists. Our clients confide in us, sharing their joys, struggles, and everything in between.
We strive to create an uplifting atmosphere filled with laughter, positivity. Our team aka TMZ or the stand up comedians we know how to bring joy to every appointment, ensuring that our clients leave not only looking fabulous, feeling rejuvenated but also leaving with some good tea lol
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist or creative in the beauty industry is that our work doesn’t feel like work at all. At SL Studios LA, we are fortunate to be part of a team that not only shares a passion for beauty but also fosters genuine friendships & have become family. We love collaborating with one another, sharing ideas, and inspiring each other to push our artistic boundaries. It’s surreal to think that we are all living our dream jobs. Each of us has a unique story and journey that led us to this point, and now we get to pursue our passions while making a living. Each appointment is an opportunity to connect on a personal level, creating bonds that go beyond the beauty services we provide. We cherish the stories, laughter, and moments of vulnerability shared with our clients, as they become an integral part of our SL Studios LA family.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson we have to unlearn is not every client is for you and and it’s okay to say no. As beginners in the beauty industry, we are scared to turn down clients, and we are taught that the clients are always right. In order to create the safe environment we want for the studio, we have to learn to set our boundaries.
This means being confident in our abilities and knowing when to say no to a client whose expectations are unrealistic or whose behavior is unacceptable. It’s okay to politely decline a request that makes us uncomfortable or goes against our values. By doing so, we are not only protecting ourselves but also our other clients who deserve a peaceful and respectful atmosphere. Remember, our studio is our space, and we have the right to control who enters it.
