We recently connected with Skylar Roemer and have shared our conversation below.
Skylar , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One thing we always find fascinating is how differently entrepreneurs think about revenue growth and cost reductions – both can be powerful ways to improve profitability. What do you spend more of your time and energy on?
We are currently in a state of trying to grow revenue, we have not had much activity since we have started our LLC. I think it is tough to determine the relationship to these in our current situation, but I know that finding the balance between two is very challenging, as you want to maintain good quality of materials, which often comes at a premium. For us, just the cost of wood for projects can be prohibitive, minus any labor that may be involved.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We got into custom woodworking very recently, mainly as a result of completing various home projects of our own and thinking we could do it for others. We mainly work with small to medium sized wood products, offering anything from cutting boards to a corner seating style piece. We are currently seeing which projects tend to bring more attention, so we have a lot of variety in projects we are trying. We are really proud of our first project, it was definitely a jump and it turned out great! We want others to know that we try to be as detailed as possible and are still just starting out, as a result we are excited to work with others whenever possible!
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
We manufacture our products after obtaining materials through a vendor. This meant we needed to purchase the necessary tools for the various steps of manufacturing, and we are still limited in what we can manufacture. The tricky part about a new business is that a lot of your profits go toward either improving your product or efficiency to ensure continued growth. This presents a challenge as you are not actually making much in profit to start. At the same time, seeing a workshop grow due to your success is very exciting.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
We were very blessed in that we had a friend who could guide us through the project for our first time and helped us to understand costs associated with the start up. We were also able to save up a bit of money to open our account, and then the initial project launched us into growing that capitol. It is still certainly a slow growth, but the main source of our initial capitol was our own savings along with profits from a few projects that we have done.
