We recently connected with Skylar Marie Coffee and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Skylar Marie, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for having me in your magazine. I’m honored!

Yes, I have been able to earn a full time living off my career as a social media influencer. Like most influencers, I earn my living off promos for various companies and brands, tiktok, Instagram reels, YouTube, and collaborations, as well as various bookings, music videos and more. I also make money from my cosmetic line, “Skylar Marie Cosmetics & Beauty” in which I sell lashes and hair paint, which is extremely popular and I also do makeup for various clients, including celebrities and tv personalities.

I feel like I’m right where I need to be in life. I started out as an influencer at the age of 16 and currently I’m 19, and I’m doing very well for myself. I’m happy that I kind of blew up at a young age cause I have more time to achieve a lot more of my goals and dreams. Quick fame doesn’t last too long. I always said that I wanted to work my way to the top so that I have a story to tell. If you haven’t been through anything in life then how can you share life experiences with others, right?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

For those that don’t know me, I started out just like everyone else, with a dream and a desire to be somebody one day. Trust and believe, success did not fall into my lap. My mom, who I was also named after, we’ve been through a lot in life. I watched my mom struggle as a single parent trying to raise me and my siblings. I always wanted to be the famous and wealthy one in the family so I could one day pay my mom back for all the hardship she went through in life. I wanted to be the one who took my family out of poverty in small town Jackson, Mississippi, where I was originally born. Looking at me now, no one will ever know what we’ve truly been through. A lot of people assumed we’ve always lived a lavish lifestyle but we didn’t. I just knew that me and my mom both were destined for greatness!

I’ve accomplished a lot at my age, thanks to God and my mom. I have my own business and I make my own money. Going threw what I’ve experienced in life made me grow up fast and it also motivated me to do what it takes to create a better life for me and my family.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?

I’m a young artist, influencer and business owner and I feel that society can best support us small business owners simply by sharing a post, spread the word, support us by utilizing our services. That’s what motivates us and keep us going. If we support one another, we are uplifting each other in a positive light. So many people could be out there doing negative things, so when you see someone doing something productive and positive, praise them and support them because being an influencer and business owner isn’t easy at all. There’s a lot of pressure, stress, long hours, and doubts, so words of encouragement are always greatly needed and appreciated.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?

I strongly advise anyone that’s trying to elevate and better their lives and way of thinking is to get a mentor and learn from other successful people. You are who you surround yourself with. Take some online courses from some of these business leaders and moguls. Research on YouTube and google. Educate yourself as much as possible because knowledge is power.
