We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Skye Wagner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Skye, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I’ve been coaching since 2009. I used to work for a non-profit organization and would coach anyone who was sent to me. This was pretty general and I usually would dive into trauma, sources of trauma and stress and help the person to move forward. In 2020, I decided to move on and become an entrepreneur, at which point I joined my life partner’s business. He then started focusing on working with men and helping with masculinity, and I niched down to focusing on women. I have always been passionate about including self-expression with self-love. I would focus on helping women express themselves authentically by means of living life the way they choose and showing up how they want to. As a naturally creative and intuitive person, I also include this in the work I do with my clients.
In December 2021, I went to a vision board workshop with one of my best friends. While we were there, we decided to do a Writer’s Workshop together. I knew this was perfectly aligned for me, but I didn’t realize how defining it would be until we did it.
Fast forward to April 2022, when we held our first collaborative workshop. In this workshop, we do not teach the attendees how to write. We teach them techniques and work with them to cultivate their skill, inspiration and personal style, and help them to expand their horizons and not limit themselves as writers and creatives. That was one of the most rewarding and energizing experiences of my life and things have never been the same since. After that, I dove deep on studying how creative energy connects to personal wellbeing, how creative expression is crucial to authenticity, whether or not the person considers themselves to be an artist. I took some additional courses in energy work as well, Now my work focuses on helping others to nurture their energy within, and heal themselves with the support of creative expression and energy work.
This all started with the moment I agreed to do a writer’s workshop.
Skye, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I do 1:1 coaching as well as group coaching and seminars. I started working for a non-profit in 2009 and did my coaching under the umbrellas of different churches and non-profits until 2020 when I decided to do it on my own. I lead writer’s workshops and coach aspiring writers and artists, helping them to find their inspiration and get grounded in confidence so that they can complete and share their work.
In my 1:1 coaching I utilize creative tools and energy work to help people increase their self-love and self-confidence. I help people who struggle with trying to live up to far too many expectations and lose sight of themselves to connect with their truths and find what is truly fulfilling for them.
I’m a writer myself and I also do photography and mixed media art, and surface pattern design on the side.
I’m also a Reiki practitioner.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I think life experience is most helpful. Not just experience working in the field, but literally experiencing life, being adventurous, seeing new places, people, events, etc. For me this has majorly broadened my horizons and deepened my level of understanding and empathy with others. Also, my own life, with the various obstacles I have overcome, has helped me to be able to help others. With a majority of my clients, I have personally been in the same or similar position as them, and this adds to why I’m so passionate about this. I strongly feel that being real with yourself about what you’ve struggled with and overcome, what your perspectives are and why, is vital to being successful. This also helps with being distinctive, finding your niche and truly connecting with the world in your unique way.
I also strongly believe that continuing to work on oneself is important. I regularly do my own inner work. I currently have a coach I’m working with. I regularly read, learn, process and even attend many personal growth seminars each year.
