We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Skye Morriseau a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Skye, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve known that music was what I wanted to do in life since I was a young kid, as early as 5 years old. It all started from me watching Hannah Montana. That was my first glimpse of the kind of career I would one day want! My mom says that as a baby, I would sit in front of the mirror and practice my facial expressions and that I would never stop singing. I guess it was just written in the stars.

Skye, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an independent Americana artist from Anchorage, Alaska. I’m currently taking a gap semester, but I will be returning to college at the University of Colorado Denver in Spring of 2025 to continue pursuing my degree in Singing and Songwriting.
I started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 12, right as I was going into middle school. I was really obsessed with writing love songs. I would just make stories up as I went along because I was 12 and the closest thing I had ever experienced to true love was Justin Bieber (and One DIrection, 5 Seconds of Summer, you get the gist). I released my first song when I was 14 and by the time I had graduated high school, I had released 3 total.
College was an eye opener for me. I was being thrown into so many new experiences and creative directions and it forced me out of my comfort zone, which pushed me in my songwriting. I’m still working on my sound and figuring out what I want to be in the music industry. My first trip to Nashville was also an eye opener. I got a little glimpse into the culture of the city and realized it was where I was meant to end up post grad.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think the best way to support an artist is to show up for them. If they have a show, go to their show, buy a t-shirt, buy their song instead of just streaming it, promote them on your social media, add them to your playlists. Tell all your friends about the artists you love, ESPECIALLY if their independent. The best thing for us indie artists is attention. People watching us and caring about the things we do is what’s going to help us the most because we don’t have labels with a bunch of money to put our stuff in front of people.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding for me is getting to play live and connect with people that way. I love hearing people sing along with me, especially if its to my own songs. It’s a different feeling when you heard people singing your own words back to you!
