We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Skye Griggs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Skye, appreciate you joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Getting my first client was actually easier than I expected. At the time, Facebook was an incredibly useful tool for connecting with people, so I posted my flyers and shared that we were accepting new clients. Within just two weeks from that one post, I landed my very first client. From there, things began to grow quickly, and within my first year in business, I had taken on more than 10 clients. That experience showed me early on how powerful consistency, visibility, and faith in your business can be.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Skye Griggs, the founder of Lizzie’s House Senior Home Care, Annie’s House Healthcare Services, and Lizzie’s House Academy. My work is rooted in care, compassion, and creating opportunities for others. Through our companies, we provide home care services for seniors ages 55 and older, support special needs clients through DODD, and offer services through OhioRISE. We also educate aspiring home care professionals and CNAs who want to become Certified Medication Aides.
We have proudly been in business for more than seven years and will celebrate eight years this coming May. Over that time, we have served hundreds of residents throughout Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Lake counties. In addition to direct care services, we have also helped more than 50 agencies get started across multiple states.
What sets me apart is that I truly love what I do. This is more than business for me — it is purpose-driven work. I am most proud of the impact we have made, not only in the lives of the individuals and families we serve, but also in helping other entrepreneurs and caregivers build something meaningful for themselves. I want people to know that my brand stands for compassion, reliability, growth, and service. My goal has always been to help people feel supported, cared for, and empowered.

Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
Running a business comes with challenges that many people never see. In some ways, working a traditional 9-to-5 can feel easier because, as a business owner, the responsibility goes far beyond the visible day-to-day work. You are carrying the weight of your team, your clients, your operations, and your long-term vision all at once.
One of the hardest parts of running a service-based business is dealing with insurance payments, because their timing does not always align with the immediate needs of your staff or the people you serve. There have been moments when delayed claims affected us tremendously and created real pressure behind the scenes. Those experiences taught me how important it is to stay prepared, think ahead, and learn how to navigate difficult seasons with strength and strategy.
As challenging as those moments have been, they have also helped shape me into a stronger business owner. They taught me resilience, problem-solving, and the importance of never giving up, even when the pressure feels heavy. My advice to other entrepreneurs is to keep pushing, keep learning, and give your business everything you have. The journey may be hard, but if you are built for it, you will find a way through.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started building my brand on Facebook in 2018, and since then, the world of marketing has changed so much. By 2026, there are more platforms, more trends, and more ways to reach people than ever before. Through all of that, one thing I have remained committed to is consistency. I have continued showing up on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, sharing content related to home care, entrepreneurship, and career growth.
Over time, that consistency helped people recognize me and connect my name with the work I do. Today, many people know me as “the Home Care Lady,” and that has come from years of intentionally building my presence and staying true to my brand. Whether someone is looking for a job, business consulting, or guidance on advancing their career, they know they can come to me.
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to stay consistent and understand your target audience. You do not need thousands of followers to build a strong and respected brand. What matters most is showing up, providing value, and letting people see who you are and what you stand for. Consistency really is key.
