We were lucky to catch up with Skye Griggs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Skye thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
On May 10,2018 I created my LLC to start my business Lizzies House Senior Home and I had no idea on where I was going to find my private clients from. I had no resources no help or any ideas, so I went to what I knew best which was getting the word out to a lot of people at once. Facebook was my first lead to let everyone know that I started this business and we were accepting new clients. Once I posted the post by 5pm that night a lady had reached out and told me that her cousin had seen my post and referred me to her. I was able to secure a 6 month contract with the client made a wonderful relationship with the family and they were so pleased with their service that they referred me to other people and clientele started coming in regularly about 3-6 months into the business.
Skye, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Lizzie’s House Senior Home Care was created from a Legacy, Lizzie Ann Brackins was born May 22nd 1915 in Alabama. She was the youngest of 6 siblings and was born to be a leader. Lizzie Brackins had 8 children of her own and raised them all to be outstanding children. When she got up in age around 97 years old she developed Dementia and needed to move in with her youngest daughter (my grandmother). We assisted her up until she passed away from Alzheimers Disease at 101 years old. During that time I fell in love with seniors having the opportunity to stay home until they pass away and not having to stay in the nursing home isolated from family. I wanted to keep her story going and Lizzie’s House Senior Home Care was created. We offer In-home care services privately and through Medicaid to give clients the opportunity to be at home in comfort and around family. With us seeing the growth of our business we started offering home care classes and programs for other entrepreneurs to start their own home care agency. We have help start over 30 plus agencies across the US since we have started Lizzie’s House Acadmey in 2019. We are a very unique company not only do we provide services for seniors we also are providing long term jobs for employees within the communities. We are a family oriented business and we are very in-tune with making sure our clientle and our employees feel like they have a extended family to be able to do excel with us here at Lizzie’s House.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
My biggest lesson in my business has been to not give up! When we first transitioned to a Medicaid agency in 2021 it was a struggle we were not trained to do do billing properly for the different insurances and getting help seemed to be impossible. We did not receive payments from and insurance company for 9 months, we were staffing about 10 clients at the time and all I could think about was this is impossible for me to fix to continue staffing and to pay the aides. I was able to make a plan execute it and survive until we were paid from the insurance company. This experience just showed me that I could handle anything thrown at my business way to protect my clients services and my employees jobs to keep everyone happy.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had no idea how I ended up in this predicament to even be writing this story for you all to read, but I am thankful for the pivot in my life that changed me forever. In 2012 I was fired from a job and my grandmother convinced me to go to a State Tested Nursing Assistance Class for 2 weeks. I decided to listen and went to complete the program and was eligible to work in nursing home facilities and really make a career for myself and turned that career into a successful business. So THANK GOD FOR A CONCERNED GRANDMOTHER!
