We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Skye Choyce a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Skye, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In my eyes being successful doesn’t only equate to the money you earn, but also about the legacy you’re creating along the way. For me personally, my main objective in my career is to open a cake lounge. However, that’s not my only goal along the way. Growing up around lots of single moms and being one myself, I’ve always wanted to give back to moms and children.
Last year, I was given the opportunity to host a mother’s day cupcake class, where moms could bring their families for free and decorate cupcakes. It gave the community a chance to gather and celebrate moms, while learning about my daily life as a baker. That event was a huge success for me personally because I was able to give back and leave a mark on kids and their families and show them that you can be a mom and run a business!
I hope to host more events like such in the future as well as open other businesses for the community! Once I leave my mark on the world, I would have known I made it. I hope to spread positivity, love , and ambition through my cakes and my journey. Honestly, without God I wouldn’t have come this far, but I’m glad to be here!

Skye, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Skye Choyce, the owner and baker for Perfect Choyce! I began baking at age 16 and turned my hobby into my dream career when COVID hit.
I was born in San Jose, but moved to Mississippi at a very young age. I moved around a lot between the south from Louisiana to Texas. Eventually, my family decided to move back to California after all the natural disasters.
“Perfect Choyce” comes from a campaign I did in middle school. I wanted to run for ASB president and needed a slogan. Mine was ” Skye Choyce is the right choice!” Well as you can imagine, I still feel the same, expect now I’m the Perfect Choyce!
I specialize in custom cakes and never-before-seen designs and flavor combinations! I offer so many custom confections, you’re guaranteed to love one!
My experience with baking for events is pretty broad and I can accommodate any special occasion. It can be as special as an engagement party or as simple as a sweet tooth fix for yourself! I’m currently located in Columubus, Ohio!

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Being that I just moved to Columubus, Ohio only six months ago, I have been doing a lot of promoting on social media, passing out flyers, local pop-ups, and passing out samples.
I have done a few charity events to get my name out there and it has been a success! Working with other small business owners and creating a network has also been a new way I’ve tried gaining clients.
This year, I am focused on trying to grow on tik tok and instagram, so I’ll be making a lot more content to do so.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I once got booked to do 400 banana pudding cups for a catering event. Being that I am a one-woman team, that meant a lot of work. I am also a mom, so I had to factor in time with my son and his schedule as well.
Upon confirming the details and making the 400 banana pudding cups, it was time to deliver them to the location. Upon arrival, the client was not there. I called a few times and was waiting patiently. Keep in mind the time is 12am because the client took quite a while to confirm the address before I took an hour drive with my son. I knew they needed them for the event the next morning at 8am.
Luckily, my friend came with me and was able to keep an eye on my son while I transported the 400 banana pudding cups to the 9th floor of the apartment complex I was at. At this point, I still haven’t reached the client to deliver, just only have the address. 20 mins later, I hear back from him and get the access code to deliver the banana pudding cups.
Finally deliver them, and then in the morning I get a upsetting message from my client after all that work because they didn’t like the cups they were in. I remained calm and responded to the client. He didn’t respond, but days later sent me a message saying “Just wanted to tell you even though I felt the way I felt! I appreciate you! The banana pudding was still very good! Gave your info to quite a few people! Not all the people showed up and people were rushing to take them home.
Some people even took some and tried to sell them to the people that hired me to cater at a different location! Banana puddings were a success! Thank you again and I appreciate you for making this happen for me!”
In the beginning, I felt defeated and under appreciated, but being upfront with my client about our agreement and the conditions at hand, I felt relieved to get this texts a few days later.
Not giving up after that day was extremely hard because as you can imagine it took quite a long time to make, package, and deliver 400 banana pudding cups. I’m extremely grateful for this experience though because it taught me to keep going even in the tough times. I now have catered many more large scale events since and gained much more experience.
