We were lucky to catch up with Skum Love recently and have shared our conversation below.
Skum, appreciate you joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I don’t know about full-time, but I’ve always worked in the music business. Started out personal assistant for different musicians on the road. Then I decided to make my own music. it definitely is a business, I do make money from my music but I supplement it with DJ gigs and working for a guitar company. So I guess you can say I do make a living, and I am a full-time artist and professional in the music industry.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Being from the inside of the industry, I knew how it works. So I use that to my advantage with my band., Skumlove.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In this business you gotta have a thick skin. There’s a lot of doors that Slam in your face there is a lot of “no thank you” or “hell no!”
We played our first show 2002 to a sold out crowd where we headlined. And kept playing sold out shows afterwards for the first year and we still bring a solid crowd to every show.
Been doing this over 20 years and every time I start back up it’s a whole new adventure.
like this time, we are doing it without a label and doing it all on our own, just like when we started and it’s a lot more fun. Just released a cover of Judas Priest’s Turbo Lover but only harder and heavier. We have more original songs and shows coming up. But we’re not looking to saturate, but slowly build and keep ourselves going.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect is looking at my creation when it’s done and being proud of what I’ve made and getting the goosebumps like it’s the first time I ever heard it. Then it would be seeing all the people in the crowd, screaming your name, singing along to the songs and smiling back at you. Just like I know, it will be when we play our first show back after Covid August 27 at the whiskey, a gogo.
