We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Skai Hye. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Skai below.
Skai, appreciate you joining us today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I’ve made LOTS of investments in my career but time is always the most rewarding to spend in my opinion. Investing time into yourself to grow, to be challenged, is kind of what life’s all about. When you have a big dream it’s so easy to become overwhelmed when trying to decide what needs to be focused on and if you’re not careful it can hold you hostage. For me it was excuses like I don’t feel like it, I have other things to do, I’m tired, or I don’t have time but I quickly realized those excuses weren’t getting me any closer to where I wanted to be. So I made a plan and started shifting my mindset to have a more positive outlook on the things I slacked on. Just those baby steps of gratitude and positivity for those necessary tasks helped me look at my career in a different light. The more I did them, the less I loathed them, and the more invested I was able to become in what I do. I’m not perfect, there are still days where I feel overwhelmed and want to shut down, but I try to make myself do at least 3 tasks to help push me forward and that helps get my mindset back on track! Breaking a big goal down to bite-sized achievements that you’re able to piece together to create your dream. It makes a mountain of a difference when you’re able to align your passion with your work ethic. You will find yourself going above and beyond and enjoying every minute of it because you’re no longer spending that energy elsewhere. Believing in myself, trusting myself, and investing in myself have put me in rooms and conversations that I couldn’t have reached if I didn’t invest in my own mental growth.
Skai, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Skai Hye and I am an artist out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma! I got into music when I was around 13 years old with some friends who I went to school with. We created a group, taught ourselves how to record, and really fell in love with creating music. I was in that group for almost 10 years and then we split up to pursue our own careers. At this point I was able to start building myself into the type of artist I wanted to be. With my name being Skai Hye I would frequently call myself the fly girl and that was the basis for my brand. When I say that I’m fly it means that I’m rising above any expectations, competition, fear, standards, or any other negative energy placed on me. The fly energy, care for what I do, versatility, and lyricism are what set me apart! I dream BIG, I used to say one day I’m going to shoot a video with a big set or one day I’m going to experiment with this sound and then I thought why am I waiting? Immediately I started pushing the bounds of what was possible and that has allowed me to create some amazing work such as my music video for my song “Make Me Sick”. Allowing myself to fully embody the artist I want to be was a game changer and the responses I got from fans was the confirmation I needed to trust myself. My goal is to inspire others to do the same because with the right mindset anything is possible! With the partnership of my manager Taylormade Jay we’ve been able to grow this brand into something that’s not just for us but for my whole community of fans. So many big plans, new songs, shows, and more coming soon, I’m excited to continue putting out music, expanding my fan base, and creating a place where everyone can be their flyest selves!
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In my opinion, it would be to pay attention to talent, don’t be blindsided by popularity or money. With social media we’ve shifted a lot as a society on what music is, what we look for in artists, and what we expect. This can be harmful because it creates situations where we give popularity to the wrong artists for the wrong things. The current industry has lot of talent but for every one that’s talented, there’s 5 just looking for money and fame. They destroy the industry in bits and pieces until it no longer holds the same value as it once did. I believe we need to start setting standards for music again! There’s so many artists who wouldn’t have survived 10-15 years ago. Why are we allowing it now? Beyond this, don’t be scared to give new artists a chance, share a link, go to a show! Support the artists you feel deserve it, not just those who you know or those who are obviously creating for the wrong reasons. Respect your local artists, even if you don’t consider yourself a fan. I see so much hate and negativity spoken about local artists on a daily basis. How do we expect artists to make it if you’re unwilling to support or even just allowing them to exist without criticism? Expecting new artists to come out of the gate with money, fans, etc and won’t support if they don’t is a little ironic to me. Give new artists a chance and open yourself up to new experiences, we may just surprise you! :)
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I think one of the best resources that I wish I would’ve taken advantage of earlier is right in your hand, a phone! The fact that your phone LITERALLY holds every resource you could want is such a blessing if you approach it the right way! Social media allows us the chance to connect with people EVERYWHERE, and gives you opportunity to bypass some of the steps artists used to have to do. Before you would rely on an A&R to find you, a label to release and distribute your music, touring to grow your fan base. Now with one post you can accomplish most of those tasks within minutes. There are definitely pros and cons to social media but for an artist this is a game changer. You’re also able to interact more directly with your fans and control your social narrative a lot easier. Another resource within your phone is YouTube! You can learn almost anything on YouTube and I did take advantage of this but there’s always more to learn. Google, I mean this one is self explanatory lol! Use it! There are so many more resources at the tips of our fingers, it just takes searching for the right things and implementing those ideas!
