We were lucky to catch up with Siyi Lin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Siyi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
In the film and television industry, most people prioritize whether a work has a market and if it can generate sufficient revenue, which is unquestionably important. Profitability is a crucial aspect in any industry. However, as a freelance producer, I place a higher value on the story itself. I believe that a compelling story will achieve commendable results and not be forgotten over time.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Before entering the film and television industry, I worked in the technology sector for many years, which equipped me with strong logical reasoning and abstract thinking skills. Upon transitioning to the film and television industry, I believe that my skills from the tech industry have played a crucial role. On one hand, it has made it easier for me to comprehend stories and discern good narratives, as all compelling stories have intricate underlying logic and well-rounded character development. On the other hand, drawing from my experience as an executive assistant to the CTO, it has enabled me to adapt to fast-paced and high-pressure environments, making me adept at problem-solving.
As a result, since entering the industry, I frequently engage in discussions with directors about the script, aiming to enhance the story and make it more achievable. I firmly believe that a good story will naturally lead to commendable results.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most fulfilling moments come when the team acknowledges your ideas and abilities. Additionally, witnessing the final presentation of the work after going through the collaborative process of creation and filming is truly rewarding. Both of these moments instill a sense of accomplishment, especially with the final product, where you know it is the result of collective effort and hard work.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
When assembling a team, I place great importance on members’ values and motivations, as they determine their work attitudes. For instance, I am particularly concerned about whether team members genuinely love films and why they chose to enter this industry. With shared values and motivations, there is better communication and more effective collaboration in the workplace. Additionally, I prioritize open communication and consistently share progress to ensure everyone is well-informed.
