We were lucky to catch up with Siyi Chen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Siyi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The project that has held the most profound meaning for me is undoubtedly our Chinese Jazz album “New Shidaiqu.” This innovative venture represents a convergence of cultural heritage and contemporary musical exploration, encapsulating both the revival of the past and the shaping of a vibrant future.
Originating from the evocative genre of “Shidaiqu” that emerged a century ago in Shanghai, “New Shidaiqu” seeks to infuse new life into this historical treasure. The project is a testament to the remarkable interplay between tradition and modernity, and the potential for cultural fusion to create something truly extraordinary.
As we delve into the rich history of “Shidaiqu,” drawing inspiration from Berliner’s insights on jazz improvisation, we are exploring how improvisational techniques can bridge eras and cultures. This endeavor is driven by a deep appreciation for the expressive nuances of both “Shidaiqu” and jazz, and how these musical forms transcend geographical and temporal boundaries.
The project’s name, “New Shidaiqu,” speaks volumes about its essence. It encapsulates a profound commitment to preserving the authenticity of the past while weaving it into the fabric of our contemporary world. This musical endeavor is not just about a revival; it’s about creating a living bridge between history and today’s global audience.
“New Shidaiqu” is more than a mere musical project. It’s a journey of rediscovery, where we unravel the timeless threads of “Shidaiqu” and reimagine its narratives for a new era. As the project continues to evolve, I am filled with an ever-deepening sense of purpose – to revive the echoes of the past and harmonize them with the cadence of the present.
In essence, “New Shidaiqu” encapsulates a vibrant interplay between heritage and innovation, forging a path that celebrates the rich tapestry of our musical heritage while embracing the boundless possibilities of tomorrow. As we navigate this creative odyssey, I am reminded that the most meaningful projects are those that not only touch the heartstrings of the past but also resonate deeply with the aspirations of the future.

Siyi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Siyi Chen, a Chinese screen composer and guzheng performer based in New York. My journey in the creative realm has led me to establish Si Scoring Studio, where I continuously explore the synergy between music technology and cross-cultural musical expression.
At Si Scoring Studio, I’ve curated a portfolio marked by innovation and dedication. Notably, my Chinese-jazz album “New shidaiqu,” a collaborative project with Yusi, was recognized by the 2022 NYC Women’s Fund, showcasing our commitment to pushing boundaries.
One of my proudest achievements includes hosting an OST concert for the game “Hot Pot For One,” an endeavor funded by the City Artist Corps grant in 2021. This event exemplifies my dedication to bringing impactful auditory experiences to diverse mediums.
My journey extends beyond traditional media. I’ve contributed to over 30 compositions across film, games, interactive media, and commercial music. This extensive body of work has earned recognition at prestigious events like the Cleverland International Film Festival, Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, IDFA, Tokyo International Short Film Festival, and London Music Video Festival.
In addition to my media contributions, I’m deeply committed to bridging tradition and technology while fostering community engagement. My selection for the Onebeat Virtual Residency in 2021 provided a platform to introduce the guzheng, a traditional Chinese instrument, and explore the synthesis of Chinese music elements with the residency’s diverse artists. This endeavor echoes my passion for breaking creative boundaries.
My journey in music has also been enriched through mentorship under esteemed figures like film orchestrator Sonny Kompanek and Grammy-nominated producer Tony Dofat. Their guidance has nurtured me into a versatile composer, songwriter, and producer, empowering me to make an impact in the media scoring community.
Ultimately, my goal is to craft auditory experiences that transcend borders, ignite conversations, and evoke emotions. I invite you to explore the world I’ve woven through sound, technology, and cultural connections.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, for me, is the profound connection I can forge with others through my work. Every brushstroke, note, or design carries a piece of my heart and perspective. When someone resonates with what I’ve created, it transcends boundaries and speaks to a shared human experience.
The ability to evoke emotions, provoke thoughts, or simply bring a moment of joy to someone’s life is an immense privilege. It’s in these moments that the essence of creativity shines – the power to bridge gaps, inspire conversations, and remind us of our shared humanity.
Moreover, the creative journey itself is deeply gratifying. The process of translating ideas into tangible forms is both exhilarating and therapeutic. Each project becomes a canvas for exploration, a platform to challenge myself, and an avenue to continuously learn and grow.
Being an artist also means embracing vulnerability. Sharing my creations with the world is an act of openness, and the feedback and interactions that follow are often enriching beyond measure. Connecting with fellow creators, collaborating on projects, and contributing to a larger creative tapestry is a privilege that fosters a sense of community and camaraderie.
Ultimately, the most rewarding part of being an artist or creative is the unique opportunity to leave an imprint on the world, however small. To spark a moment of introspection, to provide a source of solace, or to ignite inspiration in another person’s journey is a gift that continually fuels my passion and dedication.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The journey of building my social media audience has been a fulfilling and evolving experience. I started with a strong passion for sharing my artistic creations and connecting with like-minded individuals. Here’s a glimpse into my journey and some advice for those starting to build their own social media presence:
My journey began with a clear focus on my niche – sharing my music compositions, performances, and insights into my creative process. I started by creating profiles on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and RED (XiaoHongShu), tailoring each platform to showcase different aspects of my work.
Consistent Content: I made sure to post consistently, sharing a mix of finished pieces, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and engaging stories. Consistency helps to keep your audience engaged and establishes a sense of reliability.
Engaging Storytelling: I realized the power of storytelling in capturing the audience’s attention. I shared anecdotes about the inspiration behind my compositions, my experiences in the music industry, and the challenges I encountered. This personal touch helped humanize my content and connect with my audience on a deeper level.
Collaborations and Cross-Promotion: Collaborating with fellow artists, musicians, and creators allowed me to tap into their audiences and vice versa. Cross-promotion introduces your content to new audiences who share similar interests.
Engagement and Interaction: I actively engaged with my followers by responding to comments, participating in discussions, and asking for their input. Building a two-way conversation makes your audience feel valued and invested in your journey.
Sharing Value: Alongside showcasing my work, I focused on providing value to my audience. This could be through sharing tips on music production, discussing industry trends, or offering insights into my creative process. Providing value positions you as an authority in your field.
