We were lucky to catch up with Sister Indica recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sister Indica, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is hands-down the audio drama Blazed All Our Lives: a campy, bitchy, surreal soap opera set in the fictitious town of Misty River. It stars an incredibly talented – and predominately drag and LGBT – cast. If Dynasty was set in Twin Peaks, you’d get Blazed All Our Lives!
It all began as a fluke, one-off ‘special’ for my (now defunct) podcast JOY BOMB with SISTER INDICA. I’ve been obsessed with soap operas since childhood and started writing them as a kid as a way to escape a childhood of poverty and abuse. I knew I wanted to revisit that as an adult creative but it wasn’t until I came across the work of Phoenix-based drag queen (and my drag daughter) Rosie Bush that all the pieces fell into place. She is my muse! So we did the special Blazed All Our Lives: A Deadly Christmas and it came together so perfectly and beautifully, there was no way I could leave it as a one-off holiday special for JOY BOMB. It needed its own world.
I try to pull in all the “best” (or “worst”, depending who you ask) soap opera tropes: deadly diseases cured by experimental means, kidnapping, double-crossing, paternity shocks, family secrets, mysteries – with a heavy-handed dose of the surreal. Yes, Blazed All Our Lives has witches.
That is what I’ve been working on since 2018! We’ve now done the following “audio films”:
Blazed All Our Lives: A Deadly Christmas
Blazed All Our Lives: The Ghost of Lily Banks
Blazed All Our Lives: Desperate Business
Blazed All Our Lives: Journey to Oblivion
Blazed All Our Lives: Demon Lover
We are almost ready to release the newest audio film in the series:
Blazed All Our Lives: Indica’s Child
We have plans for 4 more Blazed audio films before we transition over to a spin-off series I’ve been planning!
I’m honored to have worked with so many incredible artists on this series!
Sister Indica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sister Indica and I was a member of the organization Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for a decade before I branched off and went off on my own as a “Rogue Nun”.
The reasons I became a Sister and the reasons I am a multimedia artist are pretty much the same: to heal others while also healing my own emotional/psychological wounds. There’s nothing more powerful than laughter so I try to bring smiles and giggles with whatever I’m doing.
Except for my music – that shit is just straight-up DEPRESSING! But it’s good – and upbeat! You can cry while you dance!
What sets me apart? Almost 30 years of honing on my craft and a unique life lived…it all comes out in my work. Am I reinventing a wheel? No, but I do bring a high level of quality to whatever I do. I also have a certain fearlessness a lot of drag artists don’t. It makes my work a bit more dangerous and exciting as a result.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is hearing how I helped someone through a tough time with my work. Whether it’s connecting with a theme from one of my songs or laughing at the absurdity of Blazed All Our Lives – or having their eyes opened by my political views. The fact that me doing what I do impacts anyone’s life will never stop boggling my mind.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best thing sociality can do the support artists and creatives is to SUPPORT ARTISTS AND CREATIVES!
Share your friends work.
Like & comment on their posts.
Buy their wares.
Bring creatives to the table in spaces they may not have had a way into.
Hype up your artists friends!
Few of us are getting rich – or even paying our living expenses with our art. We do it out of passion and the need to create and connect. Independent creators have the mainstream world to contend with…it’s an uphill battle to be seen & heard and our friends can help us get up that hill faster.
